I’m A Celeb’s New Chapter In Wales

Disclaimer:

Just before the conclusion of this article, there will be some reflection on some concerns regarding animal cruelty that is solely for entertainment.

Reader discretion is advised.

Helo (and g’day)! Since 2002, the premise of I’m A Celebrity: Get Me Out Of Here was about celebrities camping in a jungle in Australia [26] [39]. Unfortunately, as part of huge efforts to save as many lives as possible from the coronavirus pandemic, a lot of long travelling has become prohibited, including a long trip to Australia where the show’s usual setting lies [36] [37]. Despite this, the producers have found another way for celebrities to bring on the next set of Bushtucker trials away from the comfort of their homes. The new seemingly temporary camp site is set in a huge castle in North Wales that is known as “Gwrych Castle” [22] [33]. The land near Gwrych Castle in North Wales may not be as warm as the jungle in Australia, but the challenges in the new camp that ought to be done to earn meals besides rice and beans to be just as daring as ever before. At this time of the year, many of my fellow viewers are once again tuning into the airings of an episode ever night at nine o’clock while some of our fellow animal crossers are celebrating the dozenth anniversary of Animal Crossing: Let’s Go To The City [1] [2].

Just like in Finding Dory, there is always another way [6]. [22]

I recall the previous seasons having notable differences. For example, the 2010 series had the camps named “Camp Bruce” and “Camp Sheila”, leading to male camp mates wearing blue uniforms in Camp Bruce and female camp mates wearing pink uniforms in Camp Sheila [32] [38]. As for the brand new series in 2020, camping in a castle is now arguably the most notable difference in the show’s history. Instead of being spilt into two camps for the first few days, the celebrities all have to camp together in a big castle with various rooms for certain pastimes, such as a washroom with a watering can for a shower head [10] [15] [22]. The new and seemingly temporary camp in a castle provides quite a lot of historical assets. Just look at that scenes of the celebrities striding across the pathway and past flame torches [19] [20]. Even the background where Ant and Dec read scripts on a screen whilst facing the camera is enriched with medieval vibes with a knight’s armour and wall flame torches behind the duo at their desk. Even season of reality television shows have sudden alternations in the name of proactivity to prevent the premise from becoming predictable and stale.

Speaking of predictable, I got annoyed at how the same celebrity would always get the most votes to do many trials back when I watched some of the previous series in my teenage years [36], including the 2009 season [11].
At least the shower has a curtain this time in 2020 [15]. Talk about privacy. And thank goodness the toilet will apparently be cleaner [33]. [10]

A new location for a new season does not always mean jumping the shark, right? At least the new music for when Ant and Dec announce who will do the next trial and the brand new intermissions of various creatures in parts of Gwrych Castle enhance the freshness of a the season’s temporary settings. What matters more than which country a new season will be set in is the thrill and creativity put into many Bushtucker trials and other challenges. As an example, the first challenge all ten celebrities did collaboratively at a huge cliff on the first day has already shown the production team’s capabilities of establishing a new experience for each contestant in another country besides Australia [14]. Another example would be the challenge that involves being locked in a vault full of snakes [12]. As for the overall setting, it sure is nice to have the traditional red telephone box near the campfire [9] [10] [15] [18] [22]. Setting a new camp in a country that is one of England’s neighbours is a very legitimate move when it comes to obeying a new law in the name of fighting the spread of a virus, but at least there seems to be no shark to jump as certain traditions are still present.

To enhance the feeling of camping in Wales instead of Australia even further, castle towers have been added to the end of the title sequence, which is quite admittedly cheap. [9] [10] [12] [14] [15]
I never knew Kiosk Keith had a Welsh counterpart [7]! I cannot wait to see Kiosk Cledwyn later in the series. [22]

Even though setting a new camp in a castle in Wales is at least refreshing, not everyone will let it slide. There has been some disapproval of animals being used as obstacles in any of the Bushtucker trials in the new season by the RSPCA [29]. This is not the only time the series has been in trouble with animal rights groups. Gio D’Acampo and Stuart Manning were charged for killing a rat in one episode of the 2009 series, leading to some newer guidelines being established in the later seasons [5] [31] [36]. Near the end of the 2015 series, over one thousand viewers have complained about Fern McCann being challenged into eating a live spider, believing that it was a step too far [28] [31]. Despite the controversy surrounding the use of animals in the show’s premise, I can still admire the show for its creativity, interesting new takes on how we usually see celebrities and witty dialogues from Ant and Dec. Additionally, there should hopefully be new trials that do not take a step too far. Even though I do not condone animal cruelty, I can say that at least the RSPCA have never been known to pull ridiculous, outrageous and offensive publicity stunts in the name of supporting animal rights, unlike PETA [24] [27] [35].

Do NOT get me start on THIS garbage! Thank goodness the RSPCA were never responsible for deplorable adverts like this [27], which is why I would rather support them instead of PETA! [24]
Despite criticism about the use of animals from the RSPCA [29], at least us viewers still get to see some fun pastimes in the castle. The moment of the current league of campmates, including the handsome and charming Vernon Kay dancing around the campfire is brilliant! [9]

In conclusion, I hope my fellow English viewers are all enjoying the outcome of a new season of I’m A Celebrity: Get Me Out Of Here during England’s second lockdown [17] [30]. I would say that camping in a castle can be scarier than camping in a jungle to some degree, but still historical nonetheless if you believe in ghosts. We will be looking forward to more Bushtucker trails in the new season, along with more witty remarks and sincere expressions from the camp mates. And what I mean by witty remarks and sincere expressions is not getting into arguments [13] [25] [37], saying anything that could be classified as bullying or getting sacked due to…questionable things [4] [31] [34] [36]. Furthermore, please do not repeat any of those controversies. The British version of I’m A Celeb has come a long way since its debut in 2002 [26] [39]. Who will be crowned king or queen of the castle? Whoever will earn that title, I suppose some of us may look forward to a second season of The X Factor: Celebrity or The X Factor: The Band in 2021 despite how unnecessary those spin-offs seemed in 2019 [21] [40] [41] [42]. Before I bid you hwyl fawr, get me out of here!!

While plenty of Wrexham FC supporters are looking forward to its new ownership soon [8] [23], we shall look to more Bushtucker trials and perhaps a Welsh equivalent of a dingo dollar challenge. [3]
I’m a celebrity! No food [14]!! Well, until it is dinner time after the Bushtucker trial. [15]
