Some More Love For Littlest Pet Shop Throughout The Years

Hey, LPSTubers! Where can we find the sweetest, neatest, and littlest pets? The Littlest Pet Shop [110]! Nearly three years ago, we discussed the pros and cons of each generation of the Littlest Pet Shop franchise and thought of how all the pros can be fused into a new one to possibly satisfy nearly all fans. However, since I am not psychic, it is likely to not be the case, but that will be explained later. Last year, I wondered when there will be any new pets after analysing the reveal of an interactive LEGO Princess Peach figure, her starter course and more new expansion sets [120]. As I wonder if there will be a Wario LEGO figure this year [118], whether he will be the next president in 2024 or not [73] [101], I believe that now is the time to expand on the history of the Littlest Pet Shop franchise [121]. After that, there will be some hopes for the franchise’s next big step, according to some news from late 2022 [21] [56] [71]. Now I am starting to miss playing Pet Society, one of those Facebook games developed by Playfish besides The Sims Social and Restaurant City [8] [30] [31] [32] [90].

Proactive and loyal content creators are the key to keeping LPSTube active [70] [92], but could there be some further backup that will be explained later? [77]

Besides the Lil’s Paw Prints toys that started it all, there was the Frisky Kitty from the Ready To Go line, the Marching Mice from the Pet Presents line and the trio of puppies from the Cozy Home Pets line [103]. I guess some of the old-school Kenner pet collectors would have preferred the animated television show to be more like the animation in some of the adverts [38] [123]. Similar to the adverts for the Polly Pocket compact playsets from Bluebird [28] [75] [107] [122], there was a catchy theme song that consisted of different lyrics, depending on the line or product being advertised [7] [9] [102]. Unfortunately, a television show that was a lot more like those adverts might have been too sappy and wholesome, especially for a young male audience as many would have speculated at the time [103] [108] [123]. Nonetheless, it still would have been nice to see it feature a variety of settings where pets reside, such as an artic where a penguin could be saved by a polar bear and a stage where dogs compete in a competition. As for the toys in 1995 and 1996, there were the Shimmering Merpets and the Dazzling Hair Pets, which provided some imaginativeness before the vintage era of the franchise came to a close [103].

Kenner made their own equivalent of the second generation of My Little Pony a decade before Hasbro bought the rights to Littlest Pet Shop [38] [103] [121]. Coincidence? [103]
Here is one of the toys based on the first television show that was vastly different and hardly anything like the animation in the commercials [103] [121]. [103]

Let us stroll further down the lane of memories of the first, second and third generations. The original sculpts for the poodles had faces that were too small and human-like and strands of hair on their heads, thus looking a little strange. There were also small electronic devices that featured a pet to take care of, very much like a Tamagotchi [37] [105]. I really like the designs of the packaging for some of the pets in Japan as it consisted of a sakura vibe with the franchise’s Japanese translation being “Little Pet Shop” [57] [59]. It was also quite interesting how some of them had a little silver magnet, compared to their Western counterparts [57] [104]. I bet if Generation 2 was really brought back, there would have been another line that was a rehash of the baby pets from the Cutest Pets range from the end of the second generation featuring slightly smaller figures [24] [115], such as kittens and puppies and new colour palettes for the beloved moulds, such as the short-haired cat and collie [55] [58]. They could have been slightly bigger than the babies and be referred to as “kids”, very much like the Bratz Kidz line [12]. But wait! A mention of this idea will be mentioned later. 

Aside from how the first and second generations of Littlest Pet Shop were quite popular in Japan [2], let us not get started with the rather uncanny figure with an oversized body that had a slot to insert a lollipop into [22]. [57]

The second generation is still so popular to this day that there are several professionally made unofficial pets in that style [3] [67] [68]. The paint jobs of these unofficial pets from lpsloverqa are unmistakably masterful enough to resemble an official G2 pet from Hasbro [5] [61] [62]. A notable example is the range of white collies with differently designed eyes that were released back in 2019 [64] [65] [69] [114]. Another would be two short-haired cats; one of them resembling LPS Honey’s mascot and the other being the mascot for Alice LPS in another timeline [6] [54] [61] [62]. There was a smaller collie logically referred to as a “puppy”, but not as obvious as the Petriplets, the Teensies from the sixth generation and the LPS Babies [7] [24] [55] [115], thus resembling a kid [58]. The outcome of these fanmade creations seemed like Hasbro really brought back the old Littlest Pet Shop [36] [52] [54]. There is a virtue to not “fixing” what appears to not be broken, which could apply to the Polly Pocket Camp Adventure Llama playset from 2022 being a recycled version of the Llama Music Party playset from 2020 [45] [46] [95]. Additionally, there is nothing wrong with preferring a fanmade recreation of an official creation as Sonic P-06 has been considered an exceptional remaster of Sonic ’06 [113].

And here are some more examples of such outstanding work from lpsloverqa, including a collie with a perked-up ear. [66]

Any else to say about the original releases back in the day? More examples of the symbols in the eyes of the pets from the second generation include: 

  • Paint splats for the “messiest” pets [78] [104]
  • Half-eaten circles for the “hungriest” pets [78] [104]
  • Curved sweatdrops for the “sportiest” pets [78] [104]
  • Flowers with wider petals for the “cuddliest” pets  [78][104]
  • Flowers with narrower petals for the “grooviest” pets [78] [104]

There were also much bigger figures as if some pets have discovered the power of Mario’s red mushrooms [51] [79]. For quite a short time in about 2010, there was the cost-cutting decision to paint the pets’ eyes on their faces, which ended up looking like stickers [26]. Despite the efforts to paint them carefully and add convincing detail, they still deceased the overall visual appeal to some of us, despite how expressive they can be on some of the pets’ faces. Lastly, remember the three trilogies of games for the Nintendo DS [7] [80] [94], along with the fourth version of the first game known as the “Spring” version and Littlest Pet Shop Online, an online game that was released before they were [48] [60] [104]? What if there were “sticker” eyes with personality symbols on jumbo-sized pets before the next generation began [26] [51] [104]?

I enjoyed the casual cuteness of the Winter version of the first Littlest Pet Shop video game for the Nintendo DS [29] [116]. [80]
I think the alternative way to apply eyes to the pets was okay but my favourite style will always be the personality symbols in the regular eyes within the moulds of the bobbly heads [78] [104] [121]. [26]

To this day, the fourth generation is considered the black sheep of the franchise [121]. The Sweet Snackin’ Pets line and the Roller Roos line were considered the uncanniest, despite their individualities [25]. On a lighter note, there was a crossover between the television show based on the fourth generation and My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic on The Hub back in late 2012 [43]. Despite the hate the toys received [121], the television show was praised for sharing a few of the same redeeming qualities as My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic [39] [106]. And of course, the toys in the fourth generation are not the only Littlest Pet Shopfigurines to be considered less favourable, including the original poodle mould from the first generation and some of the “sticker eyes” pets from the third generation [26] [42]. In terms of customer satisfaction, perhaps it would be best to not give the most negatively received generation a second chance, despite the success of its television show as those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it [39] [121]. Nevertheless, the cast of the television series might as well return in a more preferable design, which will be explained later.

There will be a little more about crossing over these beloved properties later. [42]

Before and after the end of the fourth season of the television series based on the fourth generation, two short-lived generations were considered separate from the fifth and sixth generations, likely associated with the huge backlash that began in late 2012 [82] [87] [121]. One of them was referred to as “Generation 5.5”, quite like how there was a short-lived line of ponies in a chibi style that was considered “Generation 4.5”, a spin-off of the fourth generation of the My Little Pony franchise [76] [81]. The other was referred to as “Pets In The City”, which included LPS Honey’s mascot known as “Felina Meow” and also featured pets from Seal Beach, Main Place, Diamonds Hills and Acorn Park [40] [84]. There were technically generations of the run of the Kenner pets from 1992 to 1996 but stating that the first ones were the first generation would make the sixth generation “Generation 50” [103]. Whether the Pets In The City series counted as part of the fifth generation, Generation 5.5 counted as the beginning of the sixth generation or neither [82] [87], they can still be praised for not making the same big mistakes again, which were the unappealing designs in the fourth generation…and making walkable pets’ movements look like twerking at a certain angle [23] [27] [121].

From Seal Beach to Diamond Hills, some pets shimmered, and other pets glimmered back in 2016. [40]

Buying one of the pets from the third wave of the Lucky Pets line of the sixth generation of the Littlest Pet Shop franchise would have led to me becoming an LPSTuber, but I still do not believe that I can pull it off well [117] [120], considering I had no choice but to retire from YouTube last year [118]. Nevertheless, I still think the designs of the pets in the third wave were an improvement from the first one as I like the design of Sandalwood, the pet I received [19] [83] [121]. But still, not every consumer is fond of blind bags and blind boxes [44]. In 2020, the sixth generation continued with the Keep Me Pack line [18] [20] [53] [85]. The theme was casual with packaging for the Big Pet Shop pack stylised to resemble the exterior of a pet store. During the Christmas break of 2020, there was an advert calendar before the franchise seemed to be on a hiatus all of the sudden [86]. The sixth generation may not be as iconic as the pets from the second half of the 2000s and the early 2010s, but there can always be a way to bounce back from a decrease in popularity [10] [33] [34] [35]. Furthermore, proactivity is the key to maintaining relevancy, especially for plans for a new era [121].

I can say that the sixth generation could technically be over. A collaboration between Hasbro and Basic Fun! was announced in late 2022 [21] [56] [71]. It seems more likely that the vintage Littlest Pet Shop from Kenner will be revamped, possibly including the Lil’ Paw Print toys from 1992 for ‘90s nostalgia’s sake due to how Basic Fun! is known for recreating nostalgic toys [103] [121], but there is a bigger demand for the return of the iconic first and second generations from the second half of the 2000s, which could lead to successful sales [36] [111]. Why not bring back both? On the other paw, there could be a brand new seventh generation for the sake of proactivity as early as 2024 as they are responsible for the revamp of the Care Bears franchise [21]. Furthermore, perhaps there can be something new for a new generation, such as a princess-themed or a unicorn-themed line as the best aspects from the previous generations are fused all together [96] [97] [98] [99] [121]. Could Blythe be involved as the sets she co-starred in were best-sellers in the early 2010s, along with the return of the cast of pets from the 2012 television series [43] [121]? Many of us shall look forward to Hasbro and Basic Fun!’s collaboration between 2023 and 2024 [21] [56].

A re-release of some old lines worked for the Bratz franchise during its 20th and 21st anniversaries [11] [13] [14] [15]. On the other paw, could a whole new generation provide the quality I have listed nearly three years ago [121]? A new theme in a new generation could also feature a spider as cute as Lucas the Spider [72]. [4]
Will Basic Fun! help bring back the Kenner LPS, bring back the first generation from 2005 and 2006 or welcome a brand new generation [21] [56] [71] [111]? [103]

Whether LPSTube is dying or still just as relevant to this day [70] [88] [89] [92], I hope wishing the franchise a happy 30th-anniversary last year was enough [121]. If there will be another revamp during Hasbro and Basic Fun!’s collaboration, maybe there could also be a collaboration with the fifth generation of My Little Pony [112]. As a 2000s kid, I would be so hyped for a reboot of the Pixel Chix franchise later this decade, as well as a possible revamp of the second generation of Littlest Pet Shop [74] [100] [121]. In the meantime, prepare for trouble and make it double during the long overdue release of the tweevils, Kirstee and Kaycee as dolls later this year [16] [93]. Speaking of trouble, there will be plenty of it in the animated depths of Hell in Hazbin Hotel this Summer [40]. As for our fellow gamers, a new town in The Sims 4 shall await simmers who pre-order the forthcoming expansion pack titled “The Sims 4: Growing Together” [109]. Speaking of growing, the near future of the Littlest Pet Shop franchise might lead to a new era of LPSTube with some new and younger LPSTubers [77] [88] [92] [121], especially if the iconic designs of the pets from the 2000s will finally be officially brought back after so long.

I am glad there are still some LPSTubers still following their passions for making LPSTube videos. They have my big regards. [50]
During the wait for the next chapter of LPS, could there be some more pages in the Tiara Diaries later this year [96] [97] [98] [99]? Until then, artistic fans of the first, second and third generations can keep producing their own custom pets [5] [17], especially if they happen to receive a duplicate during unboxing [19] [53].
