What Could A New Generation Of Littlest Pet Shop Be Like?

I have never been a huge fan of the Littlest Pet Shop toys from Hasbro when I was a child as I was more into the Pixel Chix toy line from Mattel [18], but I will always appreciate it for bringing a huge online community of content creators together [5] [6] [30] [32] [35] [46] [57]. The legacy of the shop for adorable little pets has won hearts for almost three decades. Along with how there appears to be a whole new interpretation of My Little Pony after the finale of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic that could be qualified as “Generation 4.5” or the real fifth generation of the franchise in 2020 [2], what if a whole new decade of Hasbro ought to also bring us a new interpretation of Littlest Pet Shop? Similar to how we looked through the history of the Bratz franchise from MEGA Entertainment and discussed how each era’s best qualities could be featured for a new line of Bratz dolls back in Summer 2018 [60], we shall look each the history of Littlest Pet Shop can figure out what a new era of the franchise could feature for a high chance of it being a success in the future.

As a young social-media-savvy adult, I will always appreciate Littlest Pet Shop for being the prime reason for the gathering of a community of aspiring filmmakers on YouTube [5] [6] [30] [32] [35] [46] [57]. Despite how the community was decreasing in the late 2010s [5] [46], new generation of LPS in this decade can perhaps help the community grow again and thrive even further. [34]

It all began in 1992 when the intellectual property was created by Kenner [25] [50]. Remember kitties that did kitty things and a chimp who drank and…you know what? The very little cartoon based on the toy line that consisted of a pack of miniature animals as main characters and those mildly cheesy ‘90s cartoons vibes aired from 1995 to 1996 [26] [51] [52] [54] [61], as well as a toy line based on it that was around to promote it. Apart from the cartoonish appearance of the animals of the 1995 cartoon, the designs of the main toys were very different back in the 1990s, looking more realistic. The Zoo pets and the dogs based on the film “Beethoven’s 2nd” were a prime example of how the vintage pets consisted of more realism with lifelike features [50]. The next generation of Littlest Pet Shop ought to mostly provide realistic and convincing colour palettes for our fellow 90’s kids who miss the Kenner pets. Additionally, since the main characters from the 1995 cartoon had their own promotional toy line [50], there could also be more surreal and colorful choices of colours for some pets to make the next generation more imaginative at times.

The very first Littlest Pet Shop toys were the Lil’ Paw Prints toys that were released in 1992. [50]
lps cartoon 1995
Despite how the humanoid animals with surreal colour palettes in the first Littlest Pet Shop cartoon highly contradict the realism of the main toy line and how cheesy and weird the cartoon seems to viewers today [50] [54], the 90’s animation style was at least fluid and passable [52] [61]. [51]
In 2004, Hasbro gained the rights to the franchise after they merged with Kenner and Tonka [25] [50]. 2005 was the beginning of the first generation of Littlest Pet Shop that introduced new designs for the pets with bobble heads and anime-like eyes that gave them the adorable vibe that made them successful in the mid-2000s [53]. Aside from the cartoony vibe, they also still maintained paint jobs that made their colours realistic and convincing, just like the Kenner pets from the 1990s. Furthermore, the fond memories of our fellow 2000s kids treasuring them are partly why there is a huge online community of LPS collectors making videos with them. I believe Hasbro should once again bring back heads that can bobble. I know that it would increase the cost of the production and would make the sculpting more time-consuming, but it can at least inspire future LPSTubers to easily create skits with them as moving a bobbling head in the rhythm of speech provides a good alternative to animating lip-syncing. Additionally, the more detailed and realistic choices of colour from the first generation can further increase the quality of the seventh generation for the 2020s.

Great. Now that song from the advert for the first generation of Hasbro’s Little Pet Shop that aired back in 2005 is stuck back in my head [53]. [29]
generation one magnet
The pink magnets at the bottom of a paw on the pets were suitable for placing them on playsets back in the mid-2000s [33].
Starting back in 2007, the second generation also provided bobbling heads for the pets [50]. The only differences that gave it the recognition as a separate generation were how they had blue circular magnets on one paw each that were later replaced with practically shaped holes and how the eyes featured symbols that show their traits [25] [33]. Some examples of the symbols in the eyes were:

  • Hearts for the “friendliest” pets [50]
  • Diamonds for the “fanciest” pets [50]
  • Snowflakes for the “chilliest” pets [50]
  • Stars for the “sassiest” pets [50]

Furthermore, the second generation was also the reason for how passionate the LPSTube community is for providing making LPS-related videos due to how it stayed true to what made the first generation sell excellently. I sincerely declare that the second generation would my personal favourite because the way different symbols in the pets’ eyes represent their personalities and interested is rather creative. Additionally, I can see that eventually having shallow holes instead of a magnet for placing pets onto playsets would be safer for younger children to play with them. The seventh generation of Littlest Pet Shop can bring both of those features back for the sake of creative symbolism and further ensuring safety.

lps gen 2
I am highly fascinated by the symbolism in the eyes of the pets from the late 2000s. [50]
In 2010, the pets for the third generation had their eyes reverted to how they were in the first generation [25] [40]. They also still had the same holes for preventing any choking hazards. Furthermore, it was briefly like blending the two successful generations from the 2000s together to keep the franchise trustworthy. In addition to those facts, a crossover toy line with Littlest Pet Shop and Blythe was established [40] [49] [50], thus leading to a series of decent webisodes about Blythe and her own pack of pets throughout 2011 [22] [23] [24]. The Blythe dolls had hair that could be combed and stylish fabric clothes that suited each theme with the pet each one came with. The early 2010’s pets also increased ambition when it came to preventing the franchise from going stale by establishing a “Petriplets” line of triplet siblings and a “Walkables” line of pets that can walk [3] [21] [49]. I believe that the seventh generation should make Blythe return with the pets as their fashionable caretaker in the best quality possible for any Blythe collectors out there. Letting that happen can also help Blythe’s legacy stand out in the new decade for new consumers.

blythe with lps
Some Blythe dolls came with more than one pet. The Blythe Loves Littlest Pet Shop line was highly successful [50], which is why I suggest that a new generation for the 2020s should let Blythe be sold with Littlest Pet Shop again. [40]
WHERE ARE YOU ALL GOING
Where are you all going?! There is yet to be background for cute pets to play in! [21]
Remember when the fourth generation of Littlest Pet Shop debuted in late 2012 and received a lot of negative feedback from the fandom due to how the pets were designed, along with how Blythe was once again involved, but with plastic clothes and hair for the sake of cutting costs [9] [47] [50]? Despite the hatred the third generation of the franchise received, I think there could be an element from it for a new generation for the 2020s as the television show based on it was at least quite a hit [27]. Even though I adore the eyes of the pets from the second generation, I think bringing back some of the fourth generation’s styles of eyes can at least be that tiny element for the minority of Littlest Pet Shop collectors who at least tolerated it [44]. But then again, perhaps it is best to not risk having to put up with a majority of a fandom making complaints again. Nevertheless, the new generation can perhaps bring back the main characters of the television series based on the fourth generation in brand new designs for those who remember and enjoyed it as they got their bobbles on [3] [13] [27].

generation 3 lps
I honestly think the designs of the Generation Four pets are okay, but I can see why they were negatively received. Some torsos and limbs were too stubby and paws were too small for them to stand up [9] [25] [47], thus making them difficult for making LPS videos, but I honestly do not mind the more detailed eyes of the pets that much. [44] [50]
Later in the 2010s, the fifth generation was established [41] [42] [43] [50]. I can see that the moulds are shinier and more convincing with some elements that give them recognition as a separate generation, yet they were established during the fourth season of the second cartoon [33] [43]. The eyes were once again more anime-like and less detailed to make them look cuter. Additionally, some of the pets had circular holes in them for adding accessories, despite how off-putting they seemed without any add-ons [33] [41] [43]. Blythe was still completely plastic, but at least she did not have a burn book [36] [41] [42]. My theory for why the designers and executives at Hasbro wanted to establish another generation in the mid-2010s is because of the overwhelmingly negative feedback on the fourth generation and how it has been considered to be a failure to many consumers [50]. However, the fifth generation was also considered to be highly dissatisfying, possibly due to the flaws of the pets [47]. Despite this, perhaps a generation of Littlest Pet Shop in the 2020s can let some of the pets have some small holes in moderation for attaching fashion accessories, such as bows onto them to increase their imaginativeness by allowing young consumers to customise them.

generation 5

diamonds on lps
Some members of the LPSTube community have diamonds or pearls on the ears of their pets from the first, second and third generations [5] [30] [31] [48]. In addition to how I think a new range of pets at some point in the 2020s can features holes for accessories like some of the pets from the fifth generation [33], one of the type of accessories for brand new pets can be diamond or pearl stud earrings. [31]
Hasbro revamped the franchise in 2017, bringing new moulds that closely resembled the ones from the first and second generations [6] [28] [50]. The latest interpretation of Littlest Pet Shop from the late 2010s gave us passable toy lines, such as the Black and White collection [50]. The latest themes introduced in 2019 were Lucky Pets, Hungry Pets, and Thirsty Pets [11] [12] [39] [50]. Despite how passably quirky and recognisable the food and drink themes were, some of the symbols of the Lucky Pets made me shake my head slightly as I believe that they could have been designed more fittingly [7] [55]. Nevertheless, I simply admire the cuteness of the newest faces, especially the eyes that once again have an anime element. With an open mind, I am aware that plenty of newer consumers and fans prefer the moulds of the pets over the ones from the first and second generations [32] [38], so I believe that a new generation for the 2020s should provide the faces anatomy style from the sixth generation. Referring back to how the first and second generations provided bobbling heads, giving the seventh generation bobbling heads can also be a reference to how the sixth generation also had heads that can only slightly bobble [38].

generation 2 deer vs generation 6 deer
Here is a comparison between two pets from different eras. Despite some disapproval towards the sixth generation back in 2019 [7] [11] [12] [28], some can still highly tolerate it [39]. [38]
lps designs that make no sense
I do not mind the surreal choices of colour for the designs of from the Lucky Pets toy line. It is the symbols and how they are positioned on them I disapprove of as they do not suit the species they are on. Furthermore, the designs of a new generation should also be consistent to further increase their appeal. [7] [55]
Oh. Did I mention the third animated television series based on Littlest Pet Shop is titled “Littlest Pet Shop: A World of Our Own” and first aired on Discovery Family in 2018 [50] [59]? There is also a series of webisodes to promote the television show that is set in a completely different canon [14] [15] [16] [17], compared to the two previous cartoons and the webisodes from 2011 [22] [23] [24]. I can say that Littlest Pet Shop: A World of Our Own would be the most appealing cartoon due to how it is not based on the most negatively received generation and how the splendid art style is faithful to the late 2010s toys, compared to how the first cartoon’s characters contradicted the ‘90s toys [50] [61]. It appears that it is yet to have another season as it is currently on a hiatus. Furthermore, its second season might air later this year or a little later [59], so any signs of a whole new generation of pets might have to wait until the show has a finale. Nonetheless, if the television gets unfortunately cancelled due to sudden creative differences, it can at least be a sign of a new generation of Littlest Pet Shop coming in the early 2020s.

lps a world of our own
The art style for the “World of Our Own” canon is outstanding and true to the designs of the toys from the late 2010s. [17]
Since the My Little Pony franchise has revamped some of their characters throughout the years, such as Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy [37] [45], a new generation of Littlest Pet Shop for the 2020s can perhaps bring back:

  • Bev Gilturtle as she had her own show “Late Night Bev” [15]
  • Zoe Trent, the singing spaniel who sounded quite like Princess Celestia from My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic [13] [37]
  • Sunil Nevla since he is a mongoose, a rarer pet [13]
  • Chloe from the first Littlest Pet Shop cartoon as she was able to show that she was originally from the ancient Egyptian times [54]
  • Any of Blythe’s pets from the webisodes from 2011 [22] [23] [24]
  • As previously mentioned, Blythe Baxter as the pets’ caretaker

It would make sense if Littlest Pet Shop redesigns some of the animal characters from any of the television series and webisodes based on previous generations since the same thing has happened to some of the ponies who appeared in any of the animated films and television series based on My Little Pony [37] [45]. Showing the traits of the previously established characters in a brand new cartoon based on a new generation of Littlest Pet Shop may interest new consumers.

lps 2012 tv series
I suppose at least any of the main pets from the 2012 television series deserve a second chance in the next generation of Littlest Pet Shop. [13]

littlest pet shop presents
Bringing back Blythe to LPS would be bringing back memories of watching “Littlest Pet Shop Presents” for some of our dear early 2010s kids. [23]
In conclusion, I think a new generation of Littlest Pet Shop in the 2020s can appeal to all sides of the fandom’s spectrum by providing:

  • A huge variety of different species
  • A cast of familiar characters, possibly in new designs [53] [58]
  • Fairly detailed moulds can make each specie look highly convincing
  • Bobbling heads for LPSTubers to make them “communicate” [57]
  • Mostly paint jobs that blend some realism into their cartoonish anatomy
  • Some more colourful and surreal paint jobs for creativity
  • A few small circular holes for adding fashion accessories [32] [47]
  • Symbols in eyes that depends on a pet’s interests and traits [50]

A whole new decade means brand new things, right? It is quite exciting that there will be two brand new Monster High Skullector dolls from Mattel that will be released in 2020 after the dissatisfaction of Monster High’s second generation [8] [19]. After for possibly another revamp of Littlest Pet Shop, it ought to make all sides of the fandom bark, meow and chirp in glee by providing the most acclaimed qualities of the previous generations [20]. I simply cannot refer my blog as “The Simpsons of today’s blogging” [1], but I like to make my own predictions and suggestions for upcoming establishments within intellectual properties.

save lpstube
Despite how YouTube seems to get worse and worse as the years go on [4] [10], I am up for a new era of LPSTube featuring unicorns with bobble heads and fantastic paint jobs in a new decade. That would be a sign of a 2020s era of Littlest Pet Shop becoming a success. [5]
