The Prime Potential Of Sonic Prime

2022 has been a very interesting year for cartoons and animated films so far, including the weirdness of three Sesame Street characters as advanced robots and the story of the fifth generation of the My Little Pony franchise expanding in 2D [11] [12] [13] [47] [48]. A month after the success of the well-deserved and record-breaking sequel to his live-action hit, an animated sample of Sonic the Hedgehog’s forthcoming Netflix series has been teased, along with Battle Kitty and Kung-Fu Panda: the Dragon Knight [14] [15] [27]. I am aware that in spite of the critical acclaim of Green Eggs And Ham: The Second Serving Netflix [52] [53], Netflix has received backlash for the cancellation of certain animated projects. Nonetheless, hazbeans like me can feel the heat from a brand new sneak peek of the second part of another episode of Helluva Boss near the end of new Spring merch sales outside of Netflix’s services [6] [9]. As for what will be on Netflix soon, the teaser for Sonic Prime is a big chance for Netflix’s services to still be trusted when it comes to new animated projects being associated with the company. Moreover, let us have a discussion about it after letting the force still be with us on another Star Wars day [1] [10] [16] [26].

As cute as Hello Kitty’s friendship with Pusheen is [39] [40] [41] [42] [43] [44], I do not doubt Sonic the Hedgehog will be as adorable as he has always been in Sonic Prime [14] [15] [27]. [32]

In the teaser, the blue speedster’s voice is definitely different [14] [27], not sounding as deep as Roger Craig Smith’s voice for him [24] [25] [28] [29] [33]. It really suits his daring and heroic personality to go with his surreal ability of super speed, but unfortunately, his quote makes him sound rather arrogant, especially when asking for a sign of jealously towards him [14] [15] [27]. Yes, he can be a bit of a show-off, most notably in Sonic Colours and Sonic Colours Ultimate [24] [25] [33] [51], but there ought to be more humble quotes centred on his alliances in the forthcoming series, like the ones in the Storybook series [46]. Sonic has had many voices throughout the years with the newest voice performed by Deven Mack [3] [8] [30]. It is highly likely that the other iconic characters, such as Miles “Tails” Prower, Knuckles the Echidna and Dr. Eggman will appear in the series as there is a list of other voice actors involved too, including Brian Drummond and Shannon Chan-Kent [32]. Aside from how a brand new voice cast increases a brand new series’ individuality, what is more important than who voices Sonic and possibly the other characters would be how likeable they will be throughout the story.

The choice for Deven Mack to voice Sonic is praiseworthy for allowing a black Canadian voice actor to voice one of the most iconic video game characters of all time [8] [30]. Equal opportunities for the win, baby! [32]

The animation in this preview is exceptional, despite how cheaper it looks, compared to his Paramount counterpart voiced by Ben Schwartz [14] [15] [27] [36]. The energetic confidence he has always consisted of is clearly demonstrated in this preview. It is a bit weird to see him holding a ring that is even bigger than the average doughnut as the ring he held in a teaser for Sonic Unleashed was smaller than that [22], but it does not matter as long as they still help him maintain his life insurance [23] [24] [25]. There are some pretty convincing effects, most notably when he runs to collect rings as there is a blue aura surrounding the motion of his legs [14] [15] [27]. Other details worth pointing out are the texture of his fur and the shininess of his nose, which show some extra effort. The background is not only quite detailed but also faithfully familiar, strongly resembling good old Green Hill Zone [31] as a sign of faithfulness to the classic games being taken into consideration aside from trying something new. Aside from highly convincing 3D animation, there will need to be some engaging plots with good writing based on the adventurousness of the games.

Sonic’s quills are pretty long in his style, unlike how Sora’s iconic hairdo has been trimmed for the production of Kingdom Hearts IV [7]. Aside from that, I am sure that he will speed up with the series’ potential [15] [27] [32]. [14]

So, any ideas of what plot elements will be there in the series? Previously, we have seen an expansion of the events of Sonic Colours in honour of promoting Sonic Colours Ultimate [33] [51]. In terms of something completely new for the heroic hedgehog on Netflix, he will dash through what will be called the “Shatterverse”, meaning that he could travel to an alternate dimension, quite similar to certain plot elements of Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart and Spider-Man: Into The Spiderverse [37] [38]. In terms of character development, he may have to prove himself to be not as reckless as he seems [32], similar to Tom Wachowski’s advice to him during a fishing trip in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 [36]. Reflecting on how arrogant he sounded in the dialogue, perhaps he could learn to lose some of the arrogance [14] [15] [27]. The television series based on the Sonic Boom games was pretty much a sitcom that had different plots in each episode [28] [29], so the elements of Sonic Prime may be focused on Sonic finding his self-worth and learning how to take things on a little differently in one big storyline spilt into possibly twenty-four episodes in chronological order [32].

I suppose an episode of the series ought to bring back the Sonic Boom Sonic for some memory’s sake or Classic Sonic in honour of Sonic Origins if the prime setting will be a mysterious multiverse [28] [29] [35]. Not that I would ask for a lot as a former fangirl of the blue blur. Nonetheless, I am up for the tone of the series to be rather quirky, like Sonic Boom and My Little Pony: Tell Your Tale as someone who is up for some Monday laughs [2] [11] [12] [13] [28] [29]. Again, there ought to be exceptional writing. [32]

I do not doubt that Sonic Prime will be compared to Sonic Boom at the time of its release later this year [28] [29]. There is quite a lot of potential with a brand new voice for the titular rodent and some new form of character development for him that will hopefully not seem too off-putting in efforts to make him seem a little more realistically portrayed to a degree [14] [15] [27] [32]. In the meantime, our Sonic supporters are still looking forward to Sonic Frontiers after the success of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 which could lead to another movie possibly titled “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” [34] [36], along with the second season of Green Eggs and Ham on Netflix [52] [53]. Speaking of a new season, lone wolves are sure to howl at the full second season of Halo Infinite while I reflect on my debut in the second season of Joke Chowder [4] [54]. I just wonder why can’t there be a new season of Hello Kitty Fun, also known as “Sweet Moments With Hello Kitty” co-starring Mimmy, Kitty White’s twin sister [5] [21] [49] [50]. As for Sonic Prime, we have beheld a prime sample of its potential [14] [15] [27], much like we beheld even more potential of Buzz Lightyear’s origin [17] [18] [19] [20].

2022 is not only the 30th anniversary of Miles “Tails” Prower’s debut in 1992 but also another great year for Sonic the Hedgehog so far [23] [35] [36]. Will Sonic Prime and Sonic Frontiers make the second half of 2022 shine for the blue speedster [14] [15] [27] [34]? [32]
