More Perils And Powers Of Pauline, Mario’s Ex-Girlfriend

To start my blogging in 2019, I wrote an article about the evolution of Pauline, Mario’s former love interest [86] [87]. Before her big upgrade in Super Mario Odyssey [30] [71], there were a few fanmade ones, including a “Pauline Edition” of Donkey Kong by Mike Mika that was firstly made for his daughter [21]. Even though she is considered to be Mario’s ex-girlfriend by many fans of the franchise [30] [86] [87], there have been some speculations of the plumber being a two-timer, especially after the release of Mario Vs. Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis [35]. Nevertheless, I suspect that she is cool with being in the friend zone these days [29], quite like how Princess Daisy was probably friend zoned after the events of Super Mario Land [37]. No burning of old photographs was involved, of course [18]. I also suspect that Tiana from The Princess and the Frog will still be awesome in a brand new “What-If” scenario in Almost There, the newest book in the A Twisted Tale series [76] [77]. A year after the 40^thanniversary of Donkey Kong was marked [11]; it is about time we expand a little on Pauline’s history and behold her new participations in the Super Mario series.

This was Lady Pauline back then [86] [87]. [56]

And this is Mayor Pauline today [86] [87]. [33]

As we all know, Pauline was simply known as “Lady” in the arcade game that started it all in 1981 [71] [86] [87]. Oddly enough, her dress was blue in some ports of the game, including the one for the Atari 2600 and the one for the PC DOS, which also made Donkey Kong’s fur pink [39], possibly leading to the inspiration for a certain alternate costume in Super Smash Bros. 4 and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate [41] [42]. Pauline’s dress was green and she had a darker skin tone in the DOS version [39]. The colour of her shoes also depended on the port. Most notably, they are blue in the arcade version and the same colour as her hair in the NES version and the Push mode in Tetris DS [32] [39]. There was also a rather bizarre port of Donkey Kong from Falcon titled “Crazy Kong” that was licensed by Nintendo [46]. The construction site was green, just like in the “Luigi Edition” mod by Clippit [15]. There was also a second version of the bootleg titled “Crazy Kong II” [46]. There were quite a lot of ports of Donkey Kong and Pac-Man back in the day, but of course, the original arcade versions are still considered the most recognisable to this day [3] [4] [39] [40].

Here is the Apple II version of Donkey Kong, another port that featured Pauline’s sprite with a blue dress [39]. May I consider this the grandfather of apps from Nintendo on iOS [31]? [56]

Pauline made an appearance as “Lady” in the Family BASIC accessory for the Family Computer, also known as the “Famicom” for short, the Japanese counterpart for the Nintendo Entertainment System [50] [51] [71]. It was only released in Japan, along with the original version of Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels [75] [93]. The default palette made her sprite very similar to her on-screen appearance in Pinball [71] [50] [86] [87]. The colours of the characters can be changed, leading to the option to create Luigi with Mario’s sprite as a base [50]. In the official artwork, she looked shorter with familiar facial features to Mario [56]. The pair are also seen inflating a heart together. Speaking of a heart, the player can speak or breathe into the microphone of the second controller to fill the outline of a big heart to bring the pair together in the first minigame titled “Heart” [50]. Ah, it was undoubtful that Mario and Pauline were in love before Princess Toadstool’s debut in 1985 [29]. The Famicom’s classic mini counterpart was released exclusively in Japan in late 2016 with a port of Mario Open Gold instead of Donkey Kong Jr, compared to its overseas counterpart, the NES Classic Edition [51].

The Game & Watch version of Donkey Kong from 1982 was adapted for three Game & Watch Gallery game compilations for Nintendo handheld systems [48], which were:

• Game & Watch Gallery 2 for the Game Boy and Game boy Colour [58]
• Game & Watch Gallery 4 for the Game Boy Advance [59]
• Game & Watch Collection for the Nintendo DS [57]

The sprite of Pauline had orange hair in all versions, just like in the original arcade version, only shorter [56]. She appeared to be wearing a pair of shorts with a belt and a top instead of a long dress. Despite how she played her peril in the three adaptions of the Game & Watch version of Donkey Kong, she finally stood up for herself and kicked a younger Cranky Kong for running her dress in a magazine called “Donkey Kong Jungle Action Special” that was published back in 1995 [49]. It is a little strange how Pauline was replaced with Princess Peach in the modern version of the Game & Watch adaption of Donkey Kong, but I can see that it is a sign of her being Mario’s significant other nowadays.

Pauline’s shorts were the same colour as her top in Game & Watch 2 and the same colour as her hair in Game & Watch 4. [56]

Payback is an Aston Kole [12]. [49]

Let us not forget about Pauline’s appearance in manga. She is seen playing her peril once again in the second volume of Super Mario-kun, but it ends with a twist that resulted in her claiming that Kong is still better for some reason [71]. Later in the eleventh volume, she ran her own clothes shop. She was seen with her purse, hat and parasol on a poster in the Super Mario manga by Kazuki Motoyama [73]. In the twenty-ninth and thirtieth volume of the series by Motoyama, she was a performer in Princess Peach’s circus who got kidnapped by Donkey Kong but selflessly decided to stay to be the mother figure of Donkey Kong Junior [71]. Anyone up for some more adorableness? A young version of Pauline made an appearance in a manga series named “Otenba Peach-hime”, also known as “Tomboy Princess Peach”, in English [70]. I would love Tomboy Princess Peach to make a big comeback someday as I adore the kawaii art style from the mid-1990s. As for Pauline’s portrayals in the other two manga series, there are indeed signs of her gradually gaining a liking to the Kong clan, despite how they are likely to be considered non-canon [71].

Pauline’s appearance here is basically Jane the Killer without the creepypasta vibes [82]. [73]

Tomboy Princess Peach had an adorable concept of portraying a younger Princess Peach in a manga series. I would love to see a modern adaption of it in the future of the main games. [56]

Let us move forward to when Pauline began to look gorgeous in 3D, especially in a red dress, very much like Bella Goth in the Sims series [2] [78] [79]. I would say Pauline’s relationship with Donkey Kong is rather…complex to say the least [85] [86]. Two of her kidnappings in the Mario Vs. Donkey Kong series turned out to be staged for either testing the Mini Marios or throwing a surprise party for Mario [55] [64] [65]. In Minis On The Move, she is not the big ape’s hostage at all [61], which is yet another sign of Donkey Kong being a well-behaved and cooperative fella outside of the Donkey Kong series besides Mario Party 8 [28]. And no, their complex relationship is not what some gamers may think it is [4]. Furthermore, Pauline does not always see herself as a victim, which is a healthy and rational mindset to have [44]. Aside from Pauline and Donkey Kong getting along sometimes throughout the Mario Vs. Donkey Kong series, which must have saved Pauline from having to buy another spare red dress [55] [64] [86] [87], who would not love the Mini Pauline toys that debuted in Mini-Land Mayhem [67], along with the Mini Rosalina toys who debuted in Mini Mario & Friends: Amiibo Challenge [68]?

I do not doubt that Pauline holds no ill will towards the two Donkey Kongs nowadays [33]. And yes, I am also referring to Cranky Kong [36] [49]. I can confirm that she does not have Stockholm syndrome as her current mindset has nothing to do with the Kong clan [91] [92]. [53] [61]

The Mini Paulines are absolutely adorable! [67]

The beautiful and talented Mayor of New Donk City became a kart racer in Mario Kart Tour back in 2019 [27] [69]. In her regular red dress, she was in the New York Tour, along with Mario in a musician suit. Her New Year’s Eve outfit from the first Holiday Tour was festively fabulous [27] [60], as charming as the Edna Mode charm bracelet from Pandora [37]. As a big fan of sophisticated red clothing, I also adored her Valentine’s Day look from the Peach vs. Daisy tour known as her “Rose” outfit [27] [72]. I am up for Pauline being a racer in the next Mario Kart game that could either be another enhanced port of Mario Kart 8 that includes the courses from each wave of Booster Course Pass titled “Mario Kart 8 Double Deluxe” or a completely new instalment that includes the option to change the racer’s outfit that applies of all the characters [9] [25] [63], including Honey Queen to give her another chance at racing [23].  As for Mario Kart Tour [27], I am sure they ought to finally introduce bikes and ATVs in a future tour [24] [25] [35]. I am sure that can lead to Pauline’s official biker outfit.

Ah, the year 2020. The year that deserved to be pinned in the middle of a dartboard before it ended. As for the future, I am sure that the option to change a character’s outfit before the race can also apply to another enhanced port of Mario Kart 8 [24] [25]. Why not bring back tag team racing from Mario Kart: Double Dash as well [26]? [56]

Pauline became a new golfer in Mario Golf: Super Rush [6] [53] [71] [62] [80]. She looks sophisticated in her golf attire, especially with dark grey trousers and a red hat. I also adore the new golf outfits for Peach, Daisy and Rosalina [22] [53] [62]. Pauline’s special shot is allowing her club to transform into a microphone before whacking the ball with the bottom of its stand [6] [80]. During her special dash, she leaps and spins around elegantly as fireworks appear. Aside from Pauline becoming one of the newest golfers, I remember imagining her and Wave the Swallow being competitors in DLC for Mario & Sonic at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games since the games were delayed to 2021 in real life [90]. But of course, that never happened due to AlphaDream’s bankruptcy and how nobody expect the second Summer Olympics in Tokyo to be delayed [45] [90]. But who knows? Pauline, Wave and a few others might be new competitors in Mario & Sonic at the Milano-Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games if Nintendo and SEGA obtain the licence for that [16]. Pauline’s participation in a game of golf on the Nintendo Switch would just remind a hardcore simmer of Bella Goth’s fondness of golf [6] [79] [80].

I am so proud of Pauline, like how I was proud of Lara Croft in her collaboration with Fortnite a year ago [88]. [56]

And last, but not least, Pauline was welcomed to the roster of Mario Strikers: Battle League Football alongside Diddy Kong in the second update as TailsTubers tuned in for the third episode of TailsTube [33] [43] [54] [66] [71]. In the gameplay, she appears rather speedy in a match, yet her strength meter is the highest in her stats [33] [66]. I just love how her hyper strike is hitting the ball with her microphone, which is called the “Swing Solo” and associated with her hobby on singing that was first hinted at in a colouring book from the first half of the 1980s [33] [47] [71] [66]. Apart from her signature shade of red, she also looks gorgeous in any team colour and gear style [54]. It sure is swell to see Pauline become the newest football player alongside Diddy Kong in Mario Strikers: Battle League Football [33], like how Princess Daisy and Shy Guy were eventually squeezed into the roster in the first update [34]. Reflecting on my suggestion to bring back Honey Queen in the near future of the Mario Kart series [23], I suppose she can be a new football player in a third or fourth update [33] [34]. What can I say? I am always up for women in football as England won the UEFA Women’s EURO this year [10]. 

As previously mentioned, the near future of the Mario Kart franchise ought to feature Pauline in a red biker outfit [24] [25]. Could it result in a red version of the Peach Parasol [23] [27]? [33]

It is undeniably inspiring how Pauline has gone from the first damsel-in-dress in gaming to a playable character with an angelic singing voice [6] [33] [71] [80], somewhat like how Katie gained some independence as she got a little older in Animal Crossing: New Leaf [1]. Believe it or not, I used to think that she could be shipped with Waluigi when I was younger [7]. What could be next? A re-release of Super Mario 3D All-Stars with a port of Super Mario Galaxy 2 [89]? Mario teaching something other than typing [84] [85]? The Westernised adaption of Sailor Moon may have been a failed attempt at making Sailor Moon appeal to Western audiences [5] [81], but Pauline’s self-empowerment in the current generation of gaming can appeal to both Japanese and Western Nintendo nerds [6] [30] [33] [71] [80]. Aside from Pauline’s further progression as a character, the official teaser trailer for the Super Mario Bros. movie from Illumination Entertainment will pop up from a pipe this October [35]. Will the film be a surprisingly faithful phenomenon or the animated equivalent of the failed live-action film from 1993 [74]? Stay tuned for more gaming adventures, 1-up boys and 1-up girls [30]!

It will also not be long until Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales will be available for PC and I relish in the sin of being a Helluva Boss fan for the Halloween season [13] [14] [19] [20]. At the moment, I once again praise the lovely Pauline for achieving some greatly ambitious self-empowerment in the Switch era. Let us celebrate the fifth anniversary of her progression [30], along with the 30th anniversary of Harley Quinn’s debut [8], the 20th anniversary of the Sly Cooper franchise and the 20th anniversary of the Ratchet & Clank franchise [17] [83]! [56]
