Do I Regret Reviewing Alfred Alfer?

Disclaimer:

This is a reflection on cartoons aimed at mature audiences that contains explicit content, including:

  • Graphic sexual acts, including necrophilia
  • Strong cartoon violence, including blood and gore
  • Strong profanity
  • Seizure-inducing scenes that contain flashing lights and lighting effects
  • Graphic nudity
  • Self-mutilation
  • Racial insensitivities

This is also an aftermath regarding concerns towards racism and misogyny. Reader discretion is advised, along with a strong recommendation to seek support if you have been a target of prejudice.

For many of us, there is a time when we look back at something we became infatuated with…and suddenly regretted it. An example of this would be Bill Murray admitting that he regretted voicing Garfield in his two live-action movies [23] [24] [43]. Could this be the case for me and Alfred Alfer, the crazy canine created by Emily Rose Youcis [53]? I recall discovering the series on Newgrounds and YouTube back in 2018. The first time I analysed the series was more easy-going and the follow-up review that was published almost two years later was more critical. Some of you must have been quite bewildered at how I had the guts to review such a grotesque animated series on Newgrounds. Despite admiring the talent of the creator, I have also discovered something rather unnerving [58] [59] [63] [64]. It is no wonder I do not spew anything questionable and offensive, especially racist remarks on social media as there are some serious consequences for that, especially if you have a job [14] [38] [79]. As someone who takes acts of bigotry very seriously, some of you are probably thinking that I, unfortunately, regret reviewing the series, especially how I pointed out its positive qualities underneath a dark realisation [26] [62]. Well…do I?

I certainly do not regret the aspect of witnessing and describing the vulgar adult content in my first review as I was exactly the right age to see it at the time [59] [60]. And yes, I still am. I often aim to keep my blogs varied for readers with different interests. I believe that reviewing the series has helped expand my comfort zone to a degree, despite how used I am to reviewing episodes of Helluva Boss by now [66] [67]. Despite the risk of me regretting ever reviewing the Alfred Alfer series back in 2018 and 2020 for another reason that will be explained later, I am going to keep my reviews on my blogs for memory’s sake. [81]

I have nothing against the premise of the series being a mentally unstable dog in a psychological horror [58] [59]. I just think that the amount of vulgarity shoved into the plot overshadows a fraction of the overall depth [63] [64] There can be a little too much shock value that can overshadow a deep meaning in a story. Wouldn’t Alfred be a tad more likeable if there was some room in the finale for him to put more effort into trying to be loved after he plugged himself into the internet? You know, without going into a sex spree? I know I have self-esteem issues, but at least I show compassion to people on social media and work hard on my writing without resulting in publishing unneeded hit pieces. As empowering as it is for a female animator to animate so much shock factor [53] [58] [59], some lines can be crossed and there ought to not be so much of it to also provide far more effective character development and more legitimate aspects of an overall plot. Why not eventually draw a series of comic strips that feature some deeper developments for the crazy canine to avoid the theory that he died in reality becoming true [63] [64]?

I think it is a good thing that the segment “Hellbenders Porn” did not make it to the final outcome of the movie as that would have been a little tacked on in the film’s plot [63] [64]. [76]
I can understand that a plot in a music video would usually not be as big and complex as a plot in an animated short film [77] [84], but I still think some strength within Alfred trying to gain some admiration beyond graphic sexual acts would have greatly levelled up his likeability and greatly enhance Youcis’ skills in writing for Alfred cartoons [63] [64]. Some small improvement just had to be in “Waking Up”, huh [84]? [77]

Again, why not provide some even further development for Alfred when it comes to moving on from being ditched by Labby from Tainted Milk, a segment from Where The Dead Go To Die and his abusive childhood aside from necrophilia and a conclusion related to politics in real life [42] [72], even after he thankfully refrained from committing suicide [58] [59]? I understand that it is a difficult progress but I believe that there has been a greatly missed opportunity for Alfred to try and show some compassion beyond his depression. This suggestion of mine will also apply to Blitzo from Helluva Boss for the second part of its first season finale [34]. What do you expect? I am a Hazbean. Stolas of the Ars Goetia may have spewed explicitness on the phone in the pilot [35], but at least he made an effort in being a good father in “Loo Loo Land” [33]. I can empathise when it comes to wanting to be admired and I can see how Alfred eventually evolved into glorification at the final segment of the film, but I am sure some of us may have preferred to see a sitcom starring a far saner Alfred with Phat Dawg [53], just like in that Christmas special that was released back in December 2005 [58] [59] [63] [64] [71].

Even though it is rewarding to gain effort put into compassion and validation in return, it is important to aid the helpless and raise awareness for mental health issues. And yeah, how some crook slipped an ice lolly up Alfred’s anus in reality is really messed up [70]. Am I here to immaturely insult the Alfster like some troll [80]? No. Not at all. I just wish there could have been an alternative conclusion that made him much more comfortable with living in reality after gaining a deeper kind of independence and some deeper mental health benefits, which would have led to him becoming the saner Alfred from the Christmas special [56] [71]. [81]

Back in 2014 and later in 2016, Youcis accused the animated television show “Mr. Pickles” to be a blatant knock-off of the Alfred Alfer series [32], which was hinted at the end of “American Alfer” [53] [72]. Gruesome, isn’t it? Despite the accusation and parodic “punishment”, I would not consider Mr. Pickles a rip-off of Alfred Alfer for various reasons whilst comparing the two properties. Mr. Pickles’ character is a satanic serial killer while Alfred Alfer is a necrophilic victim of abuse who hardly takes a life [41] [47]. Mr. Pickles only speaks in reversed English when controlling the minds of other animals while Alfred will always speak and sing in forward English [31] [44] [70] [77]. Mr. Pickles has a caring human owner while Alfred is hardly owned by any human at all [41] [44]. Both canines are vulgar and sexually active in animation for adults only but have their own highly notable differences. And yes, both IPs are not beyond criticism [41] [47] [49]. To an extent, I believe that it would make a little more sense to compare Alfred Alfer to Ren And Stimpy “Adult Party Cartoon” [29] [40] [47]. It is best to look a little closer before accusing a highly similar concept of being a “rip-off”.

I honestly would not consider Mr. Pickles to be a rip-off of Alfred Alfer, unlike how many fans of the Happy Tree Friends series identified MobéBuds, also known as “London Mobile Buddies” as a rip-off at some point after 2009 [37] [50]. Additionally, an epic rap battle proved that it made more sense to compare Mr. Pickles to Labby from Tainted Milk in Where The Dead Go To Die [22]. All three canines are definitely nothing like Nintendogs [39]. [72]

I have a theory that Alfred and his dictator self could be non-binary. This is due to how he is into crossdressing and has a feminine voice [58] [59], as well as a penis that I had to censor whilst reviewing the series of course [63] [64]. Along with how his pronouns are “He”, “His” and “Him”, he was referred to as “Alfie” in a musical number that was first released back in 2015. The Crazy Frog may have been controversial for exposing his uncensored genitalia presumably for attention, especially back in 2005 when his popularity soared [18], but I deeply appreciate how he warned us about an unofficial association with him being a scam in August 2021 [52]. It is such a missed opportunity to associate Alfer with some non-binary representation without preaching it a little too much in either a sequel to the movie or another Christmas special and it may be unfortunately too late to do so now. It does not help a project that will be mentioned later on involved slaughtering homosexuals [16]. Seriously, if only Youcis’ vampire voice from her Halloween video from 2019 would have been used to voice a non-canon spin-off cartoon starring Alfred as a vampire…that does not sparkle [55] [75].

Twilight jokes aside, Alfred possibly being non-binary could have led to him being in a crossover with Helluva Boss [36]. But still, I believe that it is too late to enhance his credibility even further. Well, unless it will be completely fanmade with an alternate interpretation of Alfred [1] [27]. After all, Youcis was banned from various platforms, such as Patreon due to her antisemitism and such. [68]

The reason why some of you probably think that I regret writing about the Alfred Alfer series is how the creator, Emily Youcis turned out to be a white nationalist who has made many antisemitic claims and other racist remarks, along with crude and misogynistic remarks against women [11] [12] [13] [79]. Let us be thankful that modern feminism could be thanked for leading to Youcis achieving fame and praise for being an edgy female animator. However, there are many red flags throughout the run of the Alfred Alfer franchise, such as characters doing a certain salute and the watermelon creature who recommended excessive drinking to a heart-broken Alfred having a…not so nice name [54] [56] [57] [82]. She was also involved in the production of an online game with such a horrible concept [16]. And no, I do not think I want to mention it here. To be honest, losing at the game on purpose would be one of those moments when losing is more fun than winning. I can see at least the creative aspects of her song parodies from 2020, despite some racial slurs being included [80] [83] [85]. You would definitely not see those in any of my song parodies. Despite these controversies [15] [56], I ultimately believe that Youcis can remain happy and healthy outside of them [19] [28].

To an extent, I can understand separating the creation from the creator. Heck, I no longer support Activision Blizzard, but I can still declare to be a fan of the current incarnations of Spyro and Crash Bandicoot and simply hope for a much better ABK in the future [2] [3] [4] [57]. The same hope applies to the future of Ubisoft [5] [6] [7]. I believe that there is a fanmade version of the crazy canine living in an alternative universe in late 2021 for a reason [1] [27]. [84]
Although Youcis kept following her passion for animating for “Waking Up” [58] [59], I do not recommend watching that cartoon whatsoever due to its questionable concept, despite how it consists of skilled animation and passable voice acting for the main characters. [84]

In conclusion, do I regret reviewing Alfred Alfer? Well, not entirely. Just because I see the positive aspects of a cartoon series created by a white nationalist, does not that mean I am going to become one too. Furthermore, I never will. I honestly do not regret writing my Sonic.exe fanfiction that ended up on the Trollpasta Wiki when I was a creepypasta fan as its fate at least gave me a chance to greatly improve my skills in writing and write much better stories [51] [61]. I never intended to whiteknight Youcis as I am strongly against what she notably strives for these days, but I suggested to not go to her Bitchute channel and send her any form of hatefulness, especially death threats and I still do to this day [58] [59] [63] [64]. As much as I refrain from writing hit pieces, I am willing to take reasonable criticism on the first edition of my two novellas [65]. As for the crazy animated canine, how I was expressing concerns regarding the series gaining fairly recent attention on TikTok in spite of its discontinuation does not make me a “Karen” [9] [25] [30]. In the meantime, I guess I will just stick to playing with adorable pets in Littlest Pet Shop: Winter whilst staying out of it [21].

As always, please do not verbally attack Youcis as this is not intended to be a hit piece in the slightest. She is a very experienced content creator [77], but she still crossed a few lines later on [10] [11] [12]. I am not violating anyone’s access to free speech here, especially hers, but freedom of speech does not mean freedom from consequences. Moreover, I will go my own way, thank you very much [15] [63] [64]. [85]
I might as well be mocked, shouted at and labelled for writing and publishing this article, but I know trustworthy people within communities I can turn to if I feel lost [45] [46] [48]. I am not scapegoating those who are still fans of the Alfred Alfer series to this day since I know what it feels like to be scapegoated. Please make sure that those who encounter the series are eighteen years old or over for future reference and have a nice day. I hope you all have a great Christmas break. [71]

The Pilot Episode Of Hazbin Hotel – That’s Still Entertainment

Disclaimer:

This is a revised review and analysis of the pilot for an animated series that contains content aimed at mature audiences, including:

  • Strong profanity
  • Moderate cartoon violence and gore
  • Flashing lights
  • Moderate sexual references
  • Hellish and disturbing imagery
  • One moderate drug reference

Reader discretion is advised.

It has been almost two years since the release and critical acclaim of “That’s Entertainment”, the pilot of Hazbin Hotel and how I have been cast into artistic damnation but was enlightened by its outstanding quality and originality [23] [29] [64] [65]. The same satisfaction was applied to my experience in watching the pilot of Helluva Boss, a spin-off web series that takes place in the same interpretation of Hell [68] [69]. Were these experiences like watching a children’s cartoon with a highly manipulative religious agenda [49]? Hell no! While I have nothing against religious cartoons teaching morals, it is questionable that some notable examples send messages of not questioning religious authorities and even encouraging clouded thinking, such as homophobia [16] [25] [49] [52]. After all, I am an agnostic. On a lighter note, in preparation for the excitement of finally watching the second episode of Hazbin Hotel and celebrating the launch of the television series hopefully this October [48], I am more than sinfully delighted to rereview “That’s Entertainment”, the gem that led to the launch finally happening as there shall be a few revisions within this second analysis as if I was a cat that lost its eighth life after cautiously reviewing the sixth episode of Helluva Boss [1] [73] [74]. Hell yeah!

It looks like the next episode will finally be released without any delays this October if it is possible [48]. Hell yes! [1]
The creator, Vivienne Medrano is a very experienced and devilishly creative genius with so much passion put into two intellectual properties set in Hell [32] [64] [65] [68] [69]. [33]

The most notable redeeming qualities of the pilot are the rather distinctive art style and incredible animation [29] [30]. The setting of a unique interpretation of Hell is quite colourful and believably convincing in spite of how cartoony it is with creatively displayed satanic imagery [64] [65]. The backgrounds consist of easing colour palettes, along with advanced details. There are usually tints and shades of pink, red, and yellow to bring out the hellish vibes of a watered-down but raunchy version of Hell [29] [30]. Shades of green at the bar and in the 666 News studio stand out in moderation, although the green screen at the studio looks a little too saturated at times in my opinion. The drastic change of colours for the third musical number boosts the mood of a mysterious new ally offering some assistance in such an upbeat manner, looking gaudy but groovy and visually pleasing. Throughout the pilot, the movements of the characters are highly expressive and the amounts of facial expressions for them are varied at many angles, much like in the original Ren and Stimpy series [34] [35]. Even though some detailing of the characters may be a little excessive [68] [69], the character design is still exceptional for its originality, enhanced by the energetic animation [29] [30].

Sometimes, the characters are seen as silhouettes with glowing eyes, which adds to the dark nature of the zany interpretation of Hell. [29]
The artistry for the backstory about a certain radio demon is stylised to look hellish and uncanny, which further increases the overall artistic ambition of the pilot without providing a ridiculous reason to do so, compared to “getting serious” and “taking criticism” in Teen Titans GO [7] [10] [58]. [29]

What else makes the animation as great as hell? What enhances the ambitiousness of the animation even more is how the character’s palettes are either partially or drastically altered, depending on the lighting of the scenery [29] [30] [64] [65]. The way Angel Dust’s frosted white flesh is coloured light pink to show some lighting in the limousine is more convincing than just changing the colours of Duck Dodgers and Cadet’s attire to a murky aesthetic in the castle in “I’m Gonna Get You Fat Sucka”, the fifth episode of the first season of Duck Dodgers [13] [59]. The flashing images and distortion that occur during some of Alastor’s antics add to his villainousness and add to the hellish aspects of the afterlife in Hell [29] [30]. Despite the animation’s excellence, there are times when there can be a little too much of it to some viewers and some errors that can be spotted [23]. One error I have noticed whilst rewatching the pilot was Charlie’s jacket magically reappearing in the shot after she takes it off [29]. Even though the amount of animation can be excessive at times and several errors can be spotted in “That’s Entertainment” [23], I think the hard work put into the extraordinary animation has paid off [28] [29] [30].

The smoke and flashing light effects are quite impressive, providing a little realism in a cartoon underworld. [29]
Maybe there can be a remastered version of the pilot with these animation errors fixed [23], which might not seem all that necessary, but it can be a way to honour its legacy even further. The remaster can be part of the television series, which is highly similar to “First Day”, the twenty-fifth episode of the second season of Regular Show being a remaster of the pilot episode [41]. Other than that, I do admire how there was even effort to make the tower shown in the pilot function like a clock in real life [30]. [29]

The protagonist of the pilot, Charlie is the princess of Hell, but she is not dressed up like how a regular fairytale princess would be [29]. Instead, she wears a women’s tuxedo that consists of a red jacket and a black bowtie, which is very dashing. Can you imagine if she was in her old design and was a fierce steampunk chick who died in the 1830s and gained a monstrous left arm instead [19] [20]? I still adore the final Charlie as a sweet and well-meaning princess for the final outcome of the pilot as she is highly sympathetic with how she expresses how distraught she felts about yet another extermination [29]. Her goal to help sinners become better people in Hell make her heavenly, providing the prime source of originality in the pilot’s premise [28]. How she later calls her mother and sheds tears is relatable to me and perhaps many other people like me to a specific degree, making her more empathetic, but what makes her a strong character is how she does not give up on a dream she told, despite the ridicule she received [29] [64] [65]. I would declare that she is my favourite character due to her relatability, quite similar to how I can relate to Elsa from Frozen [15].

Charlie’s goal is very legitimate and quite agreeable. Why do the only two destinations after death have to be eternal sugar-coating or eternal shaming? [29]
Wow, indeed. It is surprising to see such a sweet gal in the horrors of Hell. [29]

It has been confirmed that Charlie is bisexual, meaning she has a girlfriend named “Vaggie” [64] [65]. The way Charlie and Vaggie have not been simply making out just to prove to the audience that they are a lesbian couple anywhere in the pilot’s plot makes their relationship far more realistically paced and far from objectifying, compared to run-of-the-mill lesbian pornography [37]. Not that I have ever watched it. You can see the realism in their healthy relationship by how Vaggie tries to convince Charlie to not turn her announcement into a musical number to make it more serious but still aims to defend her against those who mock her or try to take advantage of her. Although Vaggie’s annoyance at Angel Dust matches the test shot that was uploaded on Medrano’s YouTube channel during the beginning of 2016 a little more than a T, I just hope her bitterness towards men will be toned down to the point of her being softer towards a more trustworthy male character in the next episode or two to prevent her from being a complete misandrist. Aside from that, I admire her self-empowerment and nobility as it shows her maturity when it comes to a good representation of lesbians and bisexual females in cartoons.

Although Vaggie’s beta design in the test shot looked more original in my opinion, I still like how her final design resembles Amethyst from Steven Universe, reminding me of the positive LGBT representation that series has [46] [47]. [31]
Vaggie is feisty yet self-empowered, willing to defend her girlfriend and fiercely confront whoever would cause her goal to backfire [64] [65], even if the culprit is a test subject and she would even go as far as to hurl a knife…quite carefully. Despite her toughness, I think there can be some development or backstory on how she became that way. [29]

I am highly impressed by the unique design of Angel Dust [29] [30]. A surprise feature of his, which is growing an extra pair of arms adds up to the fact that he is meant to resemble a human-like spider demon. Surely, his homosexuality alone is not the reason why he ended up in Hell after his death, even though I do not tolerate homophobia and I would still oppose it being considered a “sin” in the afterlife after I die. He is into cocaine, sex work and weaponry, making him a sinful antihero. Aside from teasing and arguing with Vaggie relentlessly in the limo, I can see that how he could have consoled Charlie is a missed opportunity for some deeper development [68] [69]. The portrayal of Angel Dust very much reminds me of the live-action incarnation of Deadpool from the R-rated superhero film with the same name and its well-deserved sequel [11] [12] [64] [65]. Even though the four-armed frenemy’s road to redemption awaits, will he still be sexually deviant and menacing as if he was a merc with a mouth about to be a member of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for his third film [42] [61]? I guess Angie could throughout his progress as I have received a brief fanmade shout-out from him earlier this month [27].

Although Angel Dust is gay as proven by his promiscuity towards male characters, I am sure a new episode could delve into how he is willing to flirt and sleep with women for money [18]. But more importantly, eventually seeing him console Charlie sincerely would make up for how much of a missed opportunity it was in the pilot and add more to how he defends Cherri Bomb during a fight against Sir Pentious [64] [65] [68] [69]. He can continue to prove that he is more than a “gay stereotype”. [29]
Part of my motivation for doing a rereview of the pilot would be the official music video for “Addict” by Silva Hound reaching over ten million views almost a week ago. [44]

Let us investigate both sides of the war between Cherri Bomb and Sir Pentious [29]. The style of Cherri Bomb’s attire and her skills in hurling bombs fit her femininely fierce name and rebellious attitude as she simply goes ahead in honour of female empowerment in Hell [64] [65]. Since she is only going after her nemesis just to provoke him and is not fighting to rescue anyone against him in the pilot, I would say that she is quite an antiheroine so far. Looking back at the old design of Charlie [20], I think she got split into two completely different girls [29]. Sir Pentious may be a sociopath with quite a big ego, as well as a brilliant inventor due to his impulsiveness and desire to take over Hell, which is a bit clichéd for a villain’s goal. His design is freakishly infatuating as his attire makes him look sophisticated but sinister. It sure is no smooth talker though, being as loud-mouthed and repugnant as Dr. Nefarious from the Ratchet and Clank franchise [40] [64] [65]. As you can tell, I will be on Team Cherri Bomb. Who knows when there will be another battle during the run of the hotel for sinners who want to redeem themselves [29] [30]?

Imagine being kidnapped by Sir Pentious in this interpretation of Hell! What would you do? [29]
Cherri Bomb is not only a badass bomb-throwing beauty with one eye but also a loyal companion of Angel Dust [64] [65]. I wonder if she would visit the hotel to see how he is doing during his time of redemption at some point in the television series. [29]

Alastor is the charming overlord with a very dark backstory that is described by Vaggie who has every right to not trust him [29] [64] [65]. Due to his occasional sadism in the present day in Hell and longing for some relevance again with the distorted quality of an old-fashioned radio in his voice that enhances his uniqueness, I just wonder if he was ever associated in something to do with Joey Drew Studios before his death [5]. A sign of him being asexual is when he rejects Angel Dust’s offer of oral sex [29], which is what I have nothing against as a supporter of tolerance towards asexuals. However, going along with the protagonist’s plans but doing it in his own way for the sake of his ambitions in showbiz, regardless of how well a guest would do and even being open about it right next to her without second thought makes the radio demon another antihero of the show. Furthermore, he seems to be more of a psychopath than a sociopath in terms of impulsiveness and social interactions, including manipulation [39]. Could he face some consequences for running the hotel differently, despite how powerful he has proven himself to be after being confronted by Sir Pentious [29] [30]?

Analysing the characteristics of two villainous characters, I think it is safe to say that Alastor is more of a psychopath while Sir Pentious is more of a sociopath [39]. [29]

Let us delve into the portrayals of the other sinners and some other characters who are yet to make an appearance. Niffty is adorable and diligent in cleaning, but her rather hurried speech must be due to social nervousness [29] [30] [64] [65]. Husk appears to be quite bitter and compassionless, especially towards Alastor, but I believe he can provide some further development and take his duties as the bartender of the hotel quite seriously in the next episode for two, not just in exchange for alcohol for himself at times. Please do not get me started with Katie Killjoy, mocking Charlie on live television and making a homophobic remark at her, although such mockery makes me side with the Princess of Hell, increasing her likability. Tom Trench appears to be the target for slapstick, especially from Killjoy. Unfortunately, I can see that there were many characters thrown into the pilot who were either introduced a bit too quickly or did not get any focus at all [68] [69]. Hopefully, the television series can slightly reduce the number of characters being featured and let the focus of each one last for a little longer in each episode for improved pacing [29] [30].

Even though Katie Killjoy is my least favourite character of Hazbin Hotel so far [64] [65] [68] [69], her attitude of a high school bully at least makes us root for Charlie trying to accomplish her goal even more as she has someone to eventually prove wrong. I am up for a protagonist proving a bully wrong. Oh, and please keep Katie away from insects. [29]
Can you imagine if the pilot featured the characters in their old designs that were revealed at some point in the mid-2010s before the trailer for the pilot was released [20] [22] [31]? As someone who studied computer games design for a lustrum, I understand why the designs of characters in development before a project’s release are given changes over time. [29]

Anyone else needing of some analysis too? Oh dear, the fella Angel Dust hooked up with appears to have no remorse when it comes to insulting him and doing the dirty with him behind his wife’s back [29]. Charlie’s mother and father are only mentioned by her so far. Furthermore, I suppose they can stop by at the hotel for an anniversary celebration and to see how their daughter’s business is going in a new episode [64] [65]. There are many background characters shown throughout the pilot to show an incredible variety of residents of Hell [29], but as previously stated, too many characters being introduced too efficiently can cause overall writing to be slightly faulty at times, which is why continuity can be useful to make up for those small faulty parts by providing new separate development for the characters who hardly received much of it last time. If there can be further development of the sinners shown to be the guest and employees of the hotel in the pilot and some fascinating portrayals of more characters throughout the forthcoming television series [29], why the hell not? Well, if more characters will not be introduced too quickly in respective episodes [68] [69].

I wonder how supportive Charlie’s mother will be of her goal, compared to her father [68] [69]. [29]
Here is a deleted scene of the exterminators that was shown in the trailer, but not in the pilot [28]. Perhaps highly similar mid-shots of them can be shown in the next episode once a full series is on the air. After all, they are also guilty of breaking a certain commandment [21]. [28]

Looking back at my firm suggestion on not making the death of any sinner suicide due to how detestable the belief of taking your own life will land you in Hell is to me and many others out there [9] [64] [65], I actually think there could be a careful and humane way that suicide can be mentioned without being disrespectful to viewers who have had suicidal thoughts or have survived suicide attempts. The fact that a new character has ended up in Hell by suicide can build up to him or her finding a new purpose in the hotel, which can lead to relatable character development. Of course, the reason for a character’s damnation should not solely be because of suicide as again, the belief of suicide leading you to Hell is deplorable [9]. When including such a serious subject like suicide in a cartoon, it ought to be handled well as a source of character building. But please, for the sake of our mental health in the rest of the 2020s, there better not be any references to dying from coronavirus in 2020 anywhere in the television series once it airs [4] [14]! I am up for historical accuracy, but still! Let us at least be respectful and considerate, okay?

Surely, there were some brief assisted suicide jokes from Sir Pentious’ minions, but there could be a line that should not be crossed [50] [51]. [29]

Sin, of course, is why Hell is overpopulated [29]. As previously stated, part of why Angel Dust is in Hell must be because of his homosexuality, which ought to become outdated at some point for the sake of die-hard supporters of LGBT rights, despite how the religious belief is still around to this day [25]. Considering how drinking alcohol is forbidden in Islam and Hinduism [64] [65], drunkenness can be seen as sinful to a degree in Christianity [43]. Obviously, murdering people is extremely sinful as it is against the Ten Commandments in both the Catholic and Protestant versions of the Bible [3] [38], which is why Alastor, a serial killer is considered irredeemable. Gambling could also be considered a sin, which is Husk ended up in Hell in the 1970s [64] [65]. I might not be surprised if the fella Angel Dust was engaged in sexual activity with would be sent to the hotel perhaps after a hard divorce to try and stop being a filthy cheater [29]. A bar ran by Husk may decrease the chances of an alcoholic guest being redeemed, but some difficulty can provide some tension within character development, leading to some relatability and realism as we are all flawed to some degree.

I think I know what some of you are thinking. If Hazbin Hotel was set in Heaven, the characters would probably be Mary Sues and Gary Stus [17]. Technically, that could be the case. I am not endangering any religious folks just by reviewing or rereviewing an animated pilot that is impressive for its artistic qualities [73] [74]. [29]

Sinfulness aside, let us delve into some humourous moments. To an extent, I feel quite bad for that new sinner who was relieved to be conscious in the afterlife only to be run over by a car but still saw it as a well-paced and well-timed joke [29]. How Charlie’s states that the best things about her idea are highlighted in a list, but Vaggie points out that everything is highlighted reminds me of that one moment in the second season of Spongebob Squarepants [45] [57]. As for many other jokes, I think the most notable one would be when Angel Dust is like, “Harder, Daddy!” after being grasped by Sir Pentious’ chain whip and thrashed onto the road [29] [30]. I also like the sly sex joke regarding the villainous serpent’s supposedly alive hat…despite that DAMN AIR HORN!!! The moment when Angel Dust moves the window in the limo up and down is one of the reasons why he reminds me of Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool [11]. The snarky adult humour in the pilot is another reason why there is so much potential for a television series that takes place after its events [29]. Furthermore, there is at least not too much vulgarness that overshadows the characters’ portrayals, compared to Alfred from the Alfred Alfer series [70] [71].

I know that the air horn is a meme, but it is still too obnoxious for me. [29]
Nonetheless, some of the facial expressions are priceless. [29]

The cover of “Always Chasing Rainbows” from the broadway musical Oh, Look! is exactly how I have been feeling throughout the majority of the early 2020s so far [8] [60] [64] [65] [68] [69], although the first edition of my two novellas being published was my highlight of late 2020 [72]. “Inside Every Demon Is A Rainbow”, the first original song of the series is as delightful as hell with cheery and energetic vocals and witty lyrics that are associated with proposing a highly ambitious idea for helping sinners redeem themselves to solve Hell’s overpopulation problem [29] [30]. The music for the credit sequence is an instrumental rock version of it, which could mean that a reprise of it would basically be the rock version in the next episode or two on television. The beat and lyrics of Alastor’s song, known as “Alastor’s Reprise” match his character as a sinister yet charming and charismatic overlord to a T! Specific sound effects may make the audio a little excessive in some scenes, including that freaking air horn when Angel Dust asks another question about Sir Pentious’ hat as previously mentioned, but I am sure dig the musical numbers as a hell of a sucker for musicals.

The Shadow Man from The Princess and The Frog much [52]? How Alastor causes magical mayhem throughout his musical number is very much like the creative magical ambitions of the genie from Disney’s Aladdin [2] [64] [65]. [29]
Speaking of the audio, the hiss of a snake heard at times during Pentious’ presence suits him since he is…well…a cobra-like demon. Nonetheless, I can agree that too many sound effects can be a little nauseating. At least no silly whip cracks are being heard every time a character moves in the pilot [6]. [29]

So, compared to my first review of the pilot [64] [65], have my views on it changed in the slightest? Hell no! Reflecting on the success of its official French dub back in May 2020 [30] [62] [63], I believe that there is some potential to establish an official Canadian or Québec French dub to further increase the premise’s appeal to native French speakers in Canada, especially in Quebec as there are some grammatical and other differences between variants of Canadian French, such as Québec French and Metropolitan French [26] [30] [54] [75] [76]. On second thought, that might only be as necessary as a British English dub, even though I remember watching the British dub of Clifford The Big Red Dog when I was a child [55] [56]. As an adult, I will certainly look forward to finding out how successful Charlie’s business will be in a full season of Hazbin Hotel [29]. Perhaps, the airing of the television series will result in those Instagram (or Voxtagram) accounts based on many of the characters being active and canon again with new artwork promoting and expanding on their traits and developments [24]. We will be in for one hell of a ride of redemption! Okay, I will stop saying “Hell” now.

Like the radio demon said, stay tuned! [29]

Remembering Alfred Alfer To This Day

Disclaimer:

This is another article that will discuss a series of animation that features explicit and disturbing content aimed at mature audiences, including:

  • Graphic sexual acts, including necrophilia
  • Graphic nudity
  • Strong cartoon violence, including blood and gore
  • Self-mutilation
  • Seizure-inducing scenes that contain flashing colours and lighting effects
  • Strong profanity
  • Some racial insensitivities

Reader discretion is advised.

Nearly two years ago, I have written an analysis on Alfred Alfer [20] [21], a mentally ill dog who got ditched by his special friend, fornicated with the dead, and plugged himself into the internet to receive some empowerment [37]. From not being able to understand a simple example of a foreign person’s speech to disrespecting an old woman’s funeral by having sex with her corpse [35] [37], Alfred was a definition of the term “online adult cartoon” and possibly “the most famous animated porn star who ever f**ked the dead” [33]. Remember his creator, Emily Rose Youcis cosplaying as him at Midwest Furfest in Chicago back in 2015 [22]? Good times. Unfortunately, Youcis’ YouTube channel was terminated at some point in 2019 due to a few violations of their terms of service [30]. Nevertheless, her Bitchute channel provides all of her hard work dedicated to animation and some other forms of entertainment. With the ability to hold onto my sanity, I would like to further expand on my views on the earlier cartoons starring Alfred and the segments of his movie by explaining and critiquing a few details I missed during my previous analysis on the crazy canine’s legacy [20] [21], along with a suggestion for a possible new chapter.

The way Emily Youcis and a fan of her work cosplayed as Alfred Alfer was acceptable in 2015.  [22]

Once again, reader discretion is DEFINITELY advised. [31] [37]
Ah, the glorious nostalgic vibe of rather distorted microphone quality that was quite common in animation for websites back in the 2000s [10] [19]. It seems like Fatdog’s name used to be “Phat Dawg” before a teenaged Youcis’ Christmas special was being animated [25] [35]. I prefer the more stylised name for Alfred’s brown companion who was voiced by Youcis’ brother in the Christmas special and unfortunately did not return in any of the later animations. As for the Alfred’s Playhouse trilogy, how much money and such does the bawling delivery man keep in his pockets daily [24]? But during that scene, I do not really like how random images that were copied and pasted from the internet appear on the screen as they just seem tacked on. I also do not like the loud noise that plays when he keeps crying. Even though Youcis’ older animations had those flaws, the newer ones at least showed a lot of improvement with increased quality, including the moment when he spoofed GG Allin as “G.G. Alfred” [3]. As for Rise of Alfred from 2007 [36], that creepily amusing fourth-wall break that urged viewers to sing a certain song is possibly my favourite moment of the Alfred Alfer franchise.

alfred alfer in 2005
Before a younger Youcis decided to convert Alfred’s life into dark and disgusting psychological horror, it was more like an edgy sitcom with Phat Dawg when he was a lot more sane back in about 2005 [20] [21] [25]. [35]

And you will sing along too 3
And you will keep reading too. [36]
There are plenty of technical aspects of The Alfred Alfer Movie I think could have been better. When Youcis was voicing Alfred, Labby and the strange watermelon creature in the first segment, it sounded like she was speaking a bit too close to the microphone, causing some distortion within the dialogue [23] [37]. As for the flashing colours and other flashy effects featured in some scenes, I felt as if there was really no purpose to include them other than for extra effort and they seemed quite unnecessary at times, thus affecting the film’s accessibility to those with epilepsy [28] [37]. However, I think those effects could have worked better if they were reduced to only considerate amounts to make them seem less tacked on. My same statement applies to Youcis’ animated music video for the song “Boomerang” by Armon Pakdel [27]. And yes, the music playing when Alfred lusts over a pole dancing zombie in the second segment of the movie was just too distorted and screechy for my musical tastes [28] [37]. Despite the flaws, the hard work put into the fluid animation and special effects has really paid off, even when Alfer embraced his destiny with Donald Trump in the final segment [38].

watermelon creature
The pitch of the voice for the strange creature a heartbroken Alfred meets could have been lowered in an audio editing software to make him sound more convincing. The same statement applies to the audio files for Labby’s voice in the first segment of the movie as there was some voice acting that had lowered pitches in the Christmas special that featured Phat Dawg [25]. [23] [37]

sometimes less is more 3
I am not against bright special effects, but sometimes less is more. [37] [38]
Speaking of animation, I would like to express my views on Alfred animated in 3D. It is interesting enough that he made a special guest appearance in The Masks That The Monsters Wear, a chapter of Where The Dead Go To Die [2] [8] [20] [21]. In the final segment of the movie, there are two improved 3D models of him made by Kenny Robles [37] [38]. The first one is fully animated but looks rather crude. Nonetheless, he is sure delighted to receive a crown and a staff at the beginning of being loved again. The other 3D model of Alfred features him simply strapped to his chair without any movement, but its design makes him look somewhat less crude. Additionally, the lack of animation, sharp teeth and detail on his chest make the render bring out the disturbing nature of the traditional 2D Alfred. It sure is awesome to feature at least some guest artists in a huge and passionately created project [37] [38], but collaborations may not age well depending on changes within connections between collaborators [12] [13] [29]. I bring this up due to how the questionable views Youcis succumbed to back in late 2016 caused her to lose a fraction of respect [4] [5] [16].

3d alfred
The first 3D model of Alfred in the movie. [37] [38]

sometimes less is more 2
The second 3D model of Alfred in the movie being sent through a series of flashing colours. As previously stated, I believe the use of bright flashing colours and effects could have been reduced to make them more visually appealing in the movie. [37] [38]
What do I think of the overall story of The Alfred Alfer Movie? I understand how Labby ditching Alfred in an uncompassionate way begins the chapter of improvement animation and the verbal abuse the crazy canine hears when he returns to the playhouse can make the viewers sympathise with him [23] [37], but I think his character development is a little overshadowed by necrophilia and shock value [26] [28] [32] [33]. As much as I can appreciate the movie for its use of grotesque and rather graphic content, I still believe the majority of it was included plainly for shock value and seemed quite excessive at times. As for the final segment, I am not saying Youcis does not have the right to support Donald Trump, but I feel as if the Trump-supporting vibes, including Trump as Alfred’s saviour in the ending, might have alienated the Alfred fans who either rooted for Hillary Clinton or preferred not to take a side during the 2016 United States presidential election [37] [38]. I find the overall plot of the movie to be okay, but it could have been more effective with slightly less pornography, violence and overly flashy effects thrown into it and without political bias towards the conclusion.

alfred alfer movie ending
I am rather neutral towards the whole plot of the movie. I understood the connections between each segment that merge each of them into one story and I completely understand that there can be symbolism relating to a creator’s interests [37], but I feel like the Trump supporting aspects in the conclusion were quite unnecessary and did not have any impact on the plot, Well, at least Alfred seemed finally sincerely happy as he supposedly left reality behind him. [37] [38]

alfred alfer
The trailer of The Alfred Alfer Movie clearly hinted that it will be a musical [33]. I feel like there should have been an additional musical number sung by Alfred or any other characters for the fourth and final segments for the outcome to stay more true to what has been promised [37]. And yes, I believe there should have been a much better soundtrack for the pole dancing scene in the second segment [28]. [26]
I would not mind if Youcis will only downgrade Alfred’s next chapter to just a new series of a webcomics in her free time later in this new decade partially for old time’s sake [7] [12]. There is her “Which Way, White Woman?” comic that features a premise I am rather neutral with and does not really leave an encouraging impact on me [9]. Apart from that, a series of webcomics could take place after the events of the movie. Could they feature Alfred and the dictator version of himself finally become one dog in his mind? I think that could happen because of how Alfred cosplayed as Trump before going to a heavenly nebula with him in the movie’s last segment [38], which could have been a sign of him finally becoming a dictator after supposedly leaving reality. Without a newly established chapter of Alfred’s life, a theory would state that he might have died in reality due to lack of self-care [37]. Since the movie used adult content a bit too excessively and rather unnecessary political vibes [33] [37] [38], a series of webcomics starring Alfred Alfer ought to provide a more effective story, along with no stock images affecting the art quality.

emily youcis which way comic
I would be interested to see Alfred in a new series of webcomics as the appearance of the dog in one panel of Youcis’ “Which Way, White Woman?” nails her recognisable art style. But as for the premise of the comic’s premise aimed at white women, I will choose my own way, thank you very much. [9]

dictator alfred and real life images
I am not really against the crudely designed backgrounds in the movie as they can enhance the feeling of watching an extremely crude and vulgar animated film [31], but real-life images of buildings that were possibly copyrighted and such can negatively affect the setting’s originality. Perhaps they should not be used in the webcomics to further ensure they can be seen in the best quality possible. [23] [37]
A series of webisodes ought to establish new interesting character development. While Dictator Alfred at least provided some interesting traits in Alfred’s Playhouse [24], his purpose in the movie was just mocking Alfred’s loneliness and breaking the fourth wall on the television [37]. Oh, and I do not I need to explain what happens with him during G.G. Alfred’s corpse sex spree [31]. Could a new webcomic series starring Alfred as a long-overdue dictator feature him finding romance with another living dog after moving on from how Labby abandoned him [11]? Furthermore, could Alfred, in reality, be sent to an asylum-like veterinary centre, thus reducing the possibility of a theory about him dying from lack of nourishment in the movie from being established? That would help the webcomics maintain the psychological horror vibes from the Alfred’s Playhouse trilogy and the movie [24] [37]. After all, the crazy canine has Dissociative Identity Disorder and has had a bad upbringing [20] [21] [33] [36]. The progress of drawing webcomics is far less time-consuming than animating segments, so I suppose the long-haired Emily we know today could eventually agree to bring Alfred into a series of webcomics as her husband was a fan of her work before they got married [30].

no explaination here 2
Yep. No further explanation here. [31] [37]

sometimes less is more
Of course, a webcomic that consists of brightly coloured panels for a certain moment would be much more accessible to those who have epilepsy. [37] [38]
Again, I do not condone harassment towards Youcis for how insensitive she can be nowadays [4] [39]. I am not against censorship, but I am against stooping a certain low [1] [6]. She was admired how she has empowered herself by animating such vulgar and edgy content since 2005 [34]. I can approve of how she has become more aware of getting active and keeping her home clean to benefit her mental well-being outside of her creative hobbies. If she yearns to bring her sweet Alfred into the 2020s, I believe that the crazy canine’s next chapter should consist of:

  • The format of a webcomic for his creator to save a lot of time for other things besides animating [30]
  • Faintly less shock value to make room for a more valid storyline [37]
  • Some expansions on his character development after the events of his movie [37]
  • No possibly copyrighted images of third-party characters copied and pasted from the internet [24]
  • Artistic improvements from the newer animations for the best quality possible, including lighting and shading [38]

We may not know what will be next for Alfred in the early 2020s, but we may never forget how his legacy made South Park look like the cartoons based on Strawberry Shortcake [14] [15] [17] [18] [20] [21].

emily youcis 2016
Some folks can still admire Emily Youcis for her talents from 2005 to the mid-2010s [12] [13], but does that mean I support her racist and disrespectful remarks on alternatives to Twitter and YouTube from 2017 to the present [4] [39]? Absolutely not. I still do not condone taking a step too far when it comes to strongly disagreeing with her [1] [6]. As much as I can hope for her to still follow what made her popular in the first place, I still wish her the best of luck in life, especially a happy and healthy marriage and home life [30]. [29]

BOW DOWN
And to those who miss the days of Youcis drawing and animating Alfred…BOW DOWN!!! [33]

A Movie Awaits Sonic The Redesigned Rodent In 2020

Laura: Ladies and gentlemen, mobians and badniks, it finally happened. Sonic had gotten a makeover for his live-action film from Paramount Pictures that was supposed to be released in late 2019 but has been delayed to February 2020 due to the insanely huge amount of backlash on his previous design and the decision to give him a much better design [25]. Remember the first dose of challenged optimism when the first teaser trailer was released, along with the second dose with the second teaser poster [35]? It is quite climatic how a film would be delayed just to fix one big problem. It looks like we will not be seeing that action figure based on his initial design anymore [26]. Now that a second trailer has been released with Sonic’s redesign [13] [19], I need to see what it has to offer to increase the movie’s potential, but with the assistance of my boyfriend, Tom Wisniewski once again.

Tom: So, a new trailer for the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog movie has been released [19]. I don’t think I need to say how much of a disaster the previous trailer was. The fans, me included were ticked off at Sonic’s ugly design [12] [26] [33] [34], and how the movie looked like just another Chipmunks movie [1] [2] [3], but with Sonic in. However, the director Jeff Fowler actually listened to the criticism and redesigned Sonic [25].

How does the new model hold up? It’s a lot better. It’s got the proportions down better [13] [19], Sonic’s eyes are more appropriate, the colours are more vibrant and he has more of a cartoony feel, but with the odd realistic aspect, mainly the fur. It’s definitely an improvement over the rather creepy old design [12].

Laura: I think the new design of Sonic for the film is pretty cute [13] [19]. Is it me or did Sonic become shorter after they redesigned him? I can see that they have given him his usual white gloves with enough detail, along with how his fur appears to be slightly shorter. His eyes are indeed bigger and more appropriately proportioned. His nose is more rounded, thus making his face resemble his usual modern design in the games even more [22] [24]. Even his shoes have been reverted to a style that looks more similar to that iconic design from the games [22]. I can tell that they still used a person’s movements in front of a green screen to maintain the liveliness of the blue hedgehog’s movements [26]. I guess they took lessons from Detective Pikachu on how to make video game characters look cute in live-action [32]. It seems like a missed opportunity to make him Amy Rose pink in association with that Pink Sonic trend from over a year ago [5] [15] [21], but oh well. I also think that Sonic’s new and final design sure is a huge improvement and could just increase the film’s chance of not ending up as a colossal box office bomb.

A comparison between the original and updates design of Sonic for the upcoming movie. [26]
Tom: But thankfully the design isn’t the only thing that’s improved. The trailer definitely gives us more of a look at the world that this movie takes place in, and HOLY RINGS, IT’S GREEN HILL ZONE IN LIVE-ACTION CG-I [19]! Granted this will probably only be for the first part of the movie, but seeing it still put a smile on my face. A little nostalgia can go a long way [24]. While I am still puzzled why they didn’t get Roger Craig Smith to reprise his role as Sonic [22], what they showed of Ben Schwartz does capture that youthful and energetic feel I think of when I think Sonic [13] [19]. Plus many of the things he does in the trailer such as playing ping-pong with himself that just screams Sonic.

Laura: I can also see that Green Hill Zone scene at the start of the new trailer is another faithful reference to Sonic’s first adventure on the SEGA Mega Drive from 1991, besides the Giant Rings [12] [13] [19] [24]. I wish I had my own Giant Ring. Once the town of Green Hill in Montana is established, we learn that Sonic’s cause of power going out across America was a complete accident as he was just playing baseball all by himself, meaning we can at least still see him as a well-meaning hero. Considering how he mentions that his new life on Earth is enjoyable, despite his loneliness, I can tell that the film takes place before the first game, possibly in an alternative timeline in theory [13] [19]. Again, including the other main mobians, such as Knuckles the Echidna would make the movie’s production more time-consuming. Aside from the well done Green Hill Zone layout, I am also fond of Ben Schwartz’s vocal performance and how Sonic’s portrayal in the second trailer does bring out his memorable personality traits from the main games [13] [19] [22] [26].

A treat for the old schoolers! [24] [26]
blue lightning.png
And of course, there is a reason why Laura nicknames this Sonic “Blue Lightning”. [26]
So the new Hollywood version of Sonic appears to be quite a fashionista at times, as well as a fan of the Flash comics from DC [13] [19]. The moment he was wearing a karate headband and wielding nunchucks was quite assuming, even when he accidentally fell and hurt himself. How he put on different baseball caps while playing baseball on his own reminds me of Geri’s Game, an animated short film from Pixar about an old man playing chess all by himself by pretending to be an opponent [8]. The same can be said for when he plays ping pong before his adventure with Tom Wachowski. Seeing the blue blur wearing an oversized shirt and a straw hat would have been a real treat for my teenaged self as she was a quite big Sonic fangirl. The fashion accessories would probably not have saved the original design of Sonic for the film from intense panning. Furthermore, the fashion accessories for certain scenes do add to the charm of the convincing redesign.

The symbol on Sonic’s headband is a reference to the startup screen from his first game, which is a pretty nice touch. [24] [26]
Tom: We also see more scenes of Jim Carey as Dr. Robotnik who is definitely going for a different take on the classic character [26], but he’s still funny. Yeah, it may just be Jim Carey doing the Jim Carey thing, but he does what he does best, and it would probably be a safe bet to say he’s probably going to be the funniest aspect of the movie [12] [13] [19].

Laura: Thanks to some new rather amusing moments with Robotnik before his hair loss and the corruption of his moustache, including some sweet dance moves, I would say Jim Carey’s legacy as an actor has aged brilliantly. I will admit that the quirkiness from Carey as Robotnik reminds me of Austin Hargave’s funny moments as PeanutButterGamer in his game reviews [9] [10] [11] [30]. I think a remastered version of Sonic the Fighters should feature Tom Wachowski and Robotnik just so that Tom could slap the mad doctor like how he did in the new movie trailer [23]. I am up for seeing the movie to see what more quirky dialogue comes from Carey’s mouth in the persona of Sonic’s arch-nemesis.

Jim Carey: “Must win back fans. Make them forget ‘Dumb and Dumber To’.” [26]
Aside from Sonic’s fashion accessories and more engaging examples of Jim Carey’s wittiness put into the portrayal of Robotnik, the new and improved trailer has shown better examples of humor [13] [19]. I like how Sonic gains the desire to see the World’s Largest Rubberband Ball, but Tom refuses just before he notices that his new blue ally is gone and then he quickly comes back with some souvenirs stating his thoughts on the experience. I do not think that I should play darts with him as his super-fast dart-throwing even caused a bit of damage to some beverage cans. As long as there is a good amount of witty humour for the audience quite like in Sonic Colours [22], the movie can at least consist of some appeal for any fan of the heroic hedgehog. At least there will not be any…ahem…edgy humour like in the Sonic OVA movie [6] [27].

Bring on the fan service? [26]

Laura also finds this scene to be quite cute. [26]
Tom: The trailer also had a couple of songs, one of which was Blitzkrieg Bop [29], and that’s a much more upbeat and fitting tune than Gangster’s Paradise to go with a hyperactive blue hedgehog running at the speed of sound [12] [13] [19] [25].

Laura: I also believe that they have chosen some more suitable songs for the trailer this time. “Gangster’s Paradise” by Coolio was indeed a somewhat unfitting choice for the previous trailer that has unfortunately been taken down by Paramount Pictures but still can be found by other sincere movie trailer channels for the sake of comparison between the two trailers [12] [25] [26]. Luckily, the new trailer’s music is two different songs that have lyrics that suit Sonic’s name and his speed much better, which are “Blitzkrieg Bop” by The Ramones and “Supersonic” by J.J. Fad [14] [29]. At least the new and improved trailer is not a rickroll [18].

sonic in live action
Never gonna give Tom up. Never gonna slow right down. Never gonna revert back to the first design. [18] [26]
PORTAL COMEBACK
PORTAL COMEBACK!!! [26] [33]
It is incredibly considerate how a creative director can listen to a huge load of backlash from the public and take time to take action in order to increase the chances of a film receiving better reception. If it was not for how negatively received his initial design for the movie was, then the movie would have been ready to be out in theaters this month [12]. Nevertheless, I say the choice to redesign SEGA’s mascot was for the best and a sign of being able to take tough criticism. It worked for the Littlest Pet Shop brand after a ton of backlash on the designs of the pets during its third generation with Hasbro [7] [16] [17] [20] [28], didn’t it? However, just because the main character’s design has been changed for the better, does not mean other flawed aspects will be brushed off. But who knows? Maybe the overall reception after the film’s release will at least be mixed. Will watching the movie cause me to become a born-again Sonic fan as plenty of comparisons between it and the fan film from Blue Core Studios occur [4] [31]?

Tom: I am still anxious about the finished product, and ultimately the writing will dictate whether or not this movie will be good, but the trailer did give me hope. It seems the team members behind this are at least taking things seriously and want to try and appease the fans [13] [19] [25]. Not only was the design better but the clips used in the trailer I feel better captured the essence of Sonic. So I think going forwards we can hold out hope, and just pretend like that first trailer never happened [12].

new sonic movie poster again
Try the keep up, but with Sonic instead of the Kardashians! [26]
Laura: A big thank you goes to my Tom Wisniewski for his participation once again. I would love to write with him again soon [33].

Hazbin Hotel’s Pilot – Hellish, Yet Highly Outstanding

Disclaimer:

This is a review and analysis of an animated pilot that contains adult content, including strong profanity, moderate sexual references, and one moderate drug reference. Reader discretion is advised.

For every satisfying finale of an iconic cartoon, such as My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic [31], there is a pilot of a brand new cartoon, such as Hazbin Hotel [28]. In association with plenty of hype, many characters of to the new intellectual property have been revealed by Vivienne Medrano, including how previews of the pilot have been uploaded onto her YouTube channel earlier than its release date [27] [32]. We can tell that she is an experienced animator and team leader by watching her earlier animations with guest animators, including a fan animated music video of the song “Die Young” by Kesha from late 2014 [26]. As an artist and animator who is passionate about character design and refused to give up after rejection, I would say she is indeed an inspiration for young artists and animators out there [32]. In late 2019, the pilot of a brand new cartoon has risen from the depths of development, thus taking the passion and legacy of Medrano and a team of talented folks to a new level. Without further ado, prepare to analyse a whole new circle of Hell with yours truly…or repent for your sins.

stay ambitious
With such passion and talent, I think Hazbin Hotel is in good hands. [32]
die young by kesha
After all, it is not Medrano’s first time of animating with assisting animators. [26]
The quality of the animation and art style is outstanding [27] [28]. Satanic imagery is everywhere, including upside-down crosses, pentagrams and the name of Hell’s news program being “666 News”, thus making the setting believable [28]. The suitable variety of colours chosen for the characters and the aspects of the interpretation of Hell are vibrant and not too saturated with appealing contrast. Most of the time, the backgrounds consist of gothic shades of red, pink, yellow and hints of black as the prime palette, thus suiting the theme of a quirky and more lighthearted version of Hell very well. I can say that the animation of Hazbin Hotel is much more preferable, compared to the crude art style and character design of Mr. Pickles, another cartoon that features satanic elements [2]. The brilliant outcome of the animation, along with striking character design is further proof that the best of two-dimensional animation can be done by Western artists and animators, not just from the glamourous elements of anime in Japan.

Some other colour palettes are used in moderation, which helps maintain the quality of the art style. [28]
Throughout the pilot, I was rooting for Charlie, the blond-haired protagonist to successfully start her goal to help demons redeem themselves in a hotel by becoming a lot less sinful [27] [28]. She may have been born in Hell as the daughter of Lucifer and Lilith [18], but there is a batch of great qualities about her that make her quite a heavenly character. Not only do I adore her ability to sing like a Disney princess, but I admire how she has a strong desire to make a difference in the realm she was raised in, no matter how many demons berate it [27] [28]. Her determination to start a business that encourages demons to become good not only provides the premise’s originality but makes her realistically relatable as she is still willing to keep trying, despite the obstacles that hinder the challenge. As my favourite character in the pilot, the princess of Hell’s likeability truly deserves some association with cosplaying and I bet she would get along very well with Alice Angel from Bendy and the Ink Machine since they both love to sing and have some minor demonic aspects [4] [5] [25].

charlie
The introduction to Charlie’s character development. Bless her. [28]
Vaggie’s design reminds me of Amethyst from Steven Universe [20] [35]. Aside from that, I adore how she is in a romantic relationship with Charlie and is always willing to defend her [20] [28]. Moreover, I am delighted to see that there is another canon committed relationship in a cartoon pilot released towards the end of the 2010s. Of course, there is no intimacy and sexual moments between them shown anywhere in the pilot, but it has been confirmed that the two ladies are in a relationship at some point by Medrano. Good on Vaggie for punching a cameraman for insulting the one she cares about a lot [27] [28]. As a sucker for female empowerment, I also like how fierce she was when holding a spear against another character and speaking Spanish. Furthermore, she is not afraid to show aggression and be confronting to whoever jeopardizes Charlie’s goals [28]. It is shame that Vaggie died in 2014 [20], but at least she will always have the strength and sassiness to be a good partner to Charlie for the sake of positive portrayals of lesbians and bisexual females in cartoons [38].

vaggie
Don’t mess with Vaggie! [28]
charlie x vaggie
These two are cute together, aren’t they? [28]
Apart from how Angel Dust was possibly also a pornography star in the 1940s and tried to get a dose of a drug in the pilot [15], one reason for adapting to the afterlife in Hell must be his crudeness towards some of the other characters, thus making himself a comic relief character [15] [28]. Nevertheless, I can see that he has a softer side when he sees Charlie looking gloomy and reaches out to reassure her, which can help the audience maintain their tolerance for him, despite how he unfortunately backs away as he believes that his efforts may not help [15] [28]. Additionally, he also shoves his partner in battle, Cherri Bomb out of the way to prevent some clawed tentacles from grabbing her during a brutal war. Similar to Deadpool from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to a big degree [9], Angel Dust in Hazbin Hotel is indeed a comic relief character who is not afraid to spew out sass, sexual humour, provide other forms of humour and get into violence at times [28].

angel dust
Angel Dust’s personality is quite similar to Deadpool’s, but without the fourth wall wrecking. [9] [28]
creepy fan letter
I know from experience. [28]
The snake-like menace Sir Pentious and Cherri Bomb sure do not seem to like each other very much [19] [28]. They are arch-rivals after all. While watching the pilot, I had a theory that Mr. Pentious must represent the serpent that tempted Eve to eat fruit from the tree of knowledge in the Bible. However, that reference could be more likely to be represented by the apple on the cane of a new interpretation of Lucifer, Charlie’s father [18]. He also seems to be quite ruthless to Alastor, possibly because of how they are both seen as “evil”. While Sir Pentious’ design is quite scary as he strongly resembles a cobra, Cherri Bomb’s character design is awesome, matching her ruthless personality and ambitions in violence, despite consisting of feminine colours [28]. While Sir Pentious has the loud-mouthed villainousness of Dr. Nefarious from the Ratchet and Clank franchise [33], Cherri Bomb has the callousness of a fighter in Fortnite and ability to drop bombs like Bomberman from the video game series with the same name [12] [22], thus being part of how the pilot is more engaging for providing some comical violence that involves cracking some egg minions.

His hat may seem alive, but this cobra’s design is deadly! [28]
cherry bomb strikes back
Cherri Bomb’s usage of bombs and punk-like attire really suit her rebellious attitude. [28]
Alastor has some memorability of his own for his demonic yet sophisticated design, charisma, wit and the radio-like quality of his voice from how he used to be a radio host when he was alive [14] [28]. Despite his charming persona and long-lasting grin, it is no wonder he is in Hell due to how he turned out to be a serial killer [14]. Jeff the Killer anyone [24]? That moment after Vaggie confronts him with a spear is rather unsettling and it is no wonder she warns Charlie that the chance of him being a better demon is impossible [28]. Alastor also seems to be quite manipulative as he may not agree with Charlie’s idea of helping demons become good, but he merely saw her motivation into fighting after being mocked as a “performance” and aims to use her plan for his own showbiz-related ambitions [28]. Aside from how I am highly fascinated in his character design, I believe the witty and charismatic fellow, otherwise known as one of the most powerful crooks in Hell could be seen as the antihero of the pilot as he is only helping Charlie with her dream just to see how guests struggle with the progress of redemption.

alastor
Anyone up for some ASMR from this fellow later? [28]
Let us look at some other characters, including some who are yet to make an appearance. Niffty, the fast-talking and friendly yet cautious cleaner of the hotel would partly sum up my duties as a part-time cleaner outside of my writing hobby [28]. Husk may be quite aggressive and foul-mouthed with the inability to feel love and compassion, but I believe that he would take what he is assigned to do seriously in a trustworthy manner in a full series of Hazbin Hotel [16] [28], as long as there will be plenty of booze. Katie Killjoy, the news anchor is a prime example of how one star would seem sweet and innocent on television but can be rather inconsiderate towards others outside the persona [17] [27] [28]. I could not stand how she mocked Charlie’s dream on the air, thus leading to even more sinners mocking her too. No wonder she deserved to be in a fight with her. An animated series after the pilot ought to further develop the supporting characters interestingly. If any of you who are lusting over the sinful stylishness of Hazin Hotel up for creating your own fan characters, why the hell not?

niffty
Isn’t Niffty adorable? [28]

You will not get any joy from being mocked by Katie Killjoy. [28]
It fascinates me how the majority of the characters died in different eras of time, similar to how a popular online theory about most of the characters in Ed, Edd n Eddy explains that each of them represents how they died in different decades [13]. As previously mentioned, the year of Vaggie’s death was 2014, a time where female empowerment is expected [20]. Niffty died in the 1950s, which would explain the style of her attire [28]. Alastor died in 1933, which explains the style of his charisma from being a radio host [14] [28]. And of course, Angel Dust died in 1947 from a drug overdose [15]. Sir Pentious died in 1888 as his attire looks rather Victorian [19]. Husk died a gambler in the 1970s [16]. Katie Killjoy died in 1992 [17]. The cause of these deaths may be revealed when a full animated series is released in the 2020s, but I will be okay with that as long as none of them will be suicides since we are in an age where signs of suicide are not to be used for a joke, compared to how a self-inflicted gunshot to the head was a mere gag for dark humour in old cartoons from the 1940s and 1950s [21] [23].

background characters
Could this female demon have also died in the 2010s due to how she uses a smartphone? [28]
pepe lew pew with gun
Nowadays, due to mental health awareness and such, suicide cannot be joked about in cartoons anymore. I believe that is for the best. [21] [23]
Sin, of course, is present in Hazbin Hotel’s interpretation of Hell. As a die-hard LGBT rights supporter who despises the religious belief of homosexuality being a sin that leads to damnation, I have a theory that Angel Dust’s bisexuality was partly the reason why he ended up in Hell due to how such a homophobic belief is all around today [28]. The same could apply to the committed relationship between Charlie and Vaggie, despite not much romance between them being present in the pilot [28]. Katie Killjoy’s homophobia does not help. Hell, the episode of Arthur that featured Mr. Ratburn’s marriage to another man was banned from airing in Alabama…in 2019, which ticked me off of course [1]. Another example of something that is viewed as a sin in religion is alcohol as Vaggie wanted to reject the proposed bar, believing that it will endanger a guest’s goal to become far less sinful. Furthermore, religions such as Islam and Hinduism forbid alcohol consumption [29] [30]. And yes, there is a commandment in the Bible that forbids murder and there was some killing during the war between Sir Pentious and Cherri Bomb [7]. No matter the sin, Charlie would hope for redemption to begin.

other palettes in moderation
Gambling could also be seen as sinful, which is why Husk, the aggressive gambler is present in Hell. [28]
What about the three musical numbers [27] [28]? I would say that some of the lyrics of the first original song sung by Charlie are rather relatable to me as there have been times when I felt like a failure and how my hopes will not come true in the world [28]. Her second song, “Inside Of Every Demon Is A Rainbow” was firstly released as a promotional preview last year and is not only fast-paced and quite humourous with some of its lyrics but perfectly sums up her goal and makes the plot’s premise original and interesting [27] [28]. As for Alastor’s song, its vibes are quite similar to “A Friend Like Me” from the Disney adaption of Aladdin [3] [28]. If at least one musical number remains essential when a full animated series comes after the pilot’s success, then it should help maintain the intellectual property’s originality. Who knows? I could write a parody of any of these original songs someday. If Elder Price from The Book of Mormon has another spooky Mormon Hell dream, I guess he could visit Hazbin Hotel and sing a whole new song with any of the staff and guests so that he can be…well…less frightened [37].

I know exactly how Charlie feels. [28]
fiend like me
And I bet she’s never had a co-worker like Alastor before. [3] [28] [36]
So what is the recipe for the show’s concept and outcome? Well, I can say that it could be:

  • 500 grams of Zombie Hotel for the prime setting being a hotel [8]
  • 500 grams of Steven Universe for the appealing art style and LGBT themes [35] [38]
  • Two teaspoons of Mr. Pickles for satanic imagery [2]
  • One tablespoon of Phineas and Ferb for original and enjoyable songs [10] [11]
  • One cup of South Park for adult content, including profanity and sex references [34]

Yes, please make sure that none of the footage will be leaked onto YouTube Kids because there is indeed some raunchy dialogue, just like in South Park [34]. There are some uncensored dropped f-bombs and even a moment when Angel Dust offers oral sex to Alastor at the hotel [28]. And yes, Mr. Pickles also features a lot of sexual content as well that mostly comes from that bad dog [2]. Oh, and the blobs icing on the cupcakes would be Bendy and the Ink Machine for its spooky nature and interesting character design [5] [6]. Such a bizarre concoction appears to have won the hearts of many viewers since its release date on YouTube. Hell yeah!

A quick shout-out to our fellow 2000s kids! [8]
mr pickles
And I guess not all dogs go to Heaven. [2]
Overall, I would be up for going to Hazbin Hotel after I die [27] [28]. Why? Because I am amazed at the pilot’s high potential to result in a full animated series because of:

  • The colourful art style for modern audiences
  • Easing and exceptional animation
  • A likeable cast of brilliantly designed characters
  • The enjoyable voice acting for every character
  • Edgy and witty dialogue full of humour and character development
  • The unique premise and interpretation of Hell

It is not as vulgar and explicit as the Alfred Alfer series by Emily Youcis [39] [40] [41], but I can say the adult humour enhances its uniqueness and makes the pilot and hopefully a fully animated series in the 2020s completely refreshing. My fellow demons, I would like to thank Chaser Stringstroke dearly for getting me into its colourful craziness, thus motivating me into analysing it and such [36]. Our hats and horns go off to Vivienne Medrano, the creator and the rest of the team behind such a unique specimen of one hell of an animated pilot [28]. Okay, I will stop using the word “Hell” now.
