Unboxing More Hopes For “Barbie 2” Or “Ken”

This is another article that briefly discusses some spoilers in Barbie: The Movie. Feel free to avoid this article if you wish to avoid spoilers unless you have already watched the film (or do not take spoilers too seriously). 

Barbie: The Movie is officially the highest-grossing film distributed by Warner Bros. of all time [35] [101], which makes up for its concept’s previous failed attempts at being taken into action [10] [80]. Can you imagine if the movie was distributed by Universal Pictures and released in the early 2010s…or distributed by Sony and released in the late 2010s? It would have been a way different experience, indeed. If you think about it, a few internet memes can be thanked for its hype throughout 2023 besides its ambitious marketing [66] [67] [68] [125], including the appearance of a pink TARDIS in London [116]. Near its theatrical release earlier this year, I adored the feature on Google that causes the page to turn light pink as magenta sparkles appear when the user searches “barbie” or “barbie movie” [55]. The film’s popularity even resulted in so many pink recipes on Instagram [7] [21] [33] [61] [74] [84] [94]. The pink empowerment from Nicki Minaj, one of the rappers who performed “Barbie World” continued as she became a special guest in the fifth season of Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare II, Call Of Duty: Warzone 2.0 and Call Of Duty: Warzone Mobile [6] [22] [23] [24]. Due to how successful Barbie: The Movie turned out to be, there has been some speculation of how a billion dollars at the box office will result in a sequel or spin-off film…that can be done right [124] [125].

I know what you might be thinking. Really, Laura? ANOTHER article on what can be seen in a follow-up to Barbie: The Movie [124] [125]?! I know, but I believe that there is some more to discuss in terms of hoping that an unnecessary but passably faithful sequel or a more necessary spin-off in terms of furthering redeeming Ken Wilder can somewhat leave the same enlightening impact in the future and not end up like the least acclaimed Disney sequels and a few other sequels that were considered flops [3] [19] [20]. [10]

If Margot Robbie ought to reprise her role as “Stereotypical” Barbie [6], there can perhaps be an expansion of her origin that was firstly shown as a teaser in late 2022 [113]. Furthermore, a new line of dolls for marketing the sequel or spin-off could consist of Robbie’s 1959 Barbie cosplay adapted into doll form [51]. On the other doll’s hand, the second round of the origin could feature a modern equivalent of the classic swimsuit that could either be from the cover of Sports Illustrated magazine from 2014 that was part of celebrating its 50th anniversary but made some readers skeptical or the brief recreation from 2009 that was part of celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Barbie franchise to make it familiar yet fresh during the start of a sequel [11] [30] [96]. I am aware that “Stereotypical” Barbie’s origin that was first shown as a teaser trailer was meant to be a parody of 2001: A Space Odyssey for laughs [6] [10] [79] [113], but perhaps there can be a flashback scene set in 1959 during the first few sales of the first-ever Barbie doll at the beginning of “Barbie 2” or the first episode of “Barbie: The Series” for some effectiveness and more depth of “Stereotypical” Barbie’s character during her doll days.

Contrary to what some people have deplorably claimed [44], being emotional does NOT affect a woman’s intelligence. Although the extended theme of feminism ought to be not too preachy in “Barbie 2”, it can still be validated as Barbara continues to flourish as a human in the real world and aims to strive for gender equality rather than just empowering women [6] [125]. [10]

“Beach” Ken has the potential to be more than just an accessory and to play a more respectable and relatable role in “Barbie 2”, “Ken” or “Barbie: The Series” [6] [13] [124] [125]. Let us not forget about Allan Pilgrim who might just play the perfect supporting role and could empathise with him during a new era of Barbie Land [6] [59] [93]. What sort of alliance could they have with “Sugar Daddy” Ken and “Earring Magic” Ken? As praiseworthy as the elements of feminism are in Barbie Land, it is important to understand that misandry is not a true part of feminism. After all, men can be feminists too. Surely, “Stereotypical” Barbie does not need another existential crisis, but there ought to not be a sign of a Ken being corrupted by an exaggerated patriarchy that led to building a wall to prevent anyone from leaving or entering the land again. As stereotypical as this sounds, I would not be surprised if the 3D effects of the logo for “Ken” would be a vibrant shade of blue and the logo’s style would be just like the logo for Barbie: The Movie [118]. More importantly, it would still make more sense to make a spin-off titled “Ken” to make up for the accusations of misandry and “wokeness” Barbie: The Movie has received [8] [124].

“Beach” Ken also has the potential to strive for gender equality within further redemption [6]. In the real world in real life, gender equality ought to apply to both genders, along with non-binary people and those on the autism spectrum as we remain aware of the people around us [130]. [10]

Who else could possibly be part of a new addition to the cast? Perhaps Gal Gabot (who is known for playing the role of Diana Prince in Wonder Woman) can be another new Barbie or even a Teresa in Barbie Land (or Monterrey, according to Matthew Patrick) to make up for a missed opportunity during a busy schedule at the time [86] [131], which could also apply to Amy Schumer [10]. Making a new Barbie played by a competent new cast member have the occupation of a computer engineer without the assistance of a Ken can make up for a certain controversy [11]. As for some new Kens, one can be played by Cillian Murphy to not only be a brief reference to the Barbenheimer meme but also a chance to make up for the offence caused by some uses of it in Japan [58] [60] [68] [112]. Could Tom Holland, Chris Evans or Chris Pratt provide the same Kenergy [4] [56] [69] [70]? There are a lot of choices when it comes to introducing new Barbies and Kens in “Barbie 2”, “Ken” or “Barbie: The Series” as there have been so many dolls throughout the years, but it would be wise to adapt or even satirise more of the arguably most memorable ones [124] [125].

Which shade of tint of pink will any of the new Barbies in Barbie Land wear in “Barbie 2”, “Ken” or “Barbie: The Series” [6] [49] [114]? Which beauty trends would they follow as dolls? Which era of the Barbie franchise would they be stylised in [2] [12] [15] [40] [54] [79]? Of course, not all the Princess Barbies have to be like Princess Aurora [75]. [10]

And who would have thought Scott Pilgrim would be the only Allan in Barbie Land [59] [80] [114]? But in all seriousness, I believe that it would not hurt to have a stunt double in the cast for slapstick in the sequel or spin-off to prevent a certain accident from happening again [10]. [10]

Any more ideas on how Barbie Land can be expanded? Reflecting on my suggestion to establish a monarchy in Barbie Land as a reference to the animated films based on Barbie as various princesses [7] [124], possibly including Rapunzel and Annalise from Barbie as The Princess and The Pauper [7], the castle for all Princess Barbies to rule can alternatively be as pink and regal as the Sleeping Beauty castle in Disneyland Paris known as “Le Château de la Belle au Bois Dormant” [45]. And surely, the depictions of horses that occurred during the corruption of Barbie Land that transformed it into “Kendom” can still be around in “Barbie 2”, “Ken” or “Barbie: The Series” possibly alongside depictions of unicorns. Reflecting on Matthew Patrick’s theory on Barbie Land being a metaphor for Mattel’s factory in Monterrey [86], perhaps a new Barbie or a new Ken can speak Spanish as a second language for many others but without repeating the controversy a certain “Mexican” Barbie doll caused back in 2013 [11] [31] [32]. Why not include a pink swimming pool by a new dreamhouse as well, but without the need for pink dye as the water in Barbie Land…is solid [6] [17] [18] [82] [98]? Surely, Barbie Land can feature some new buildings and such in a sequel, spin-off or television series [124].

Look at this glorious flag [9]! Can you imagine an alternative costume for Liberty Belle, Blossom’s alter-ego from the episode of the third season of The Powerpuff Girls titled “Sub-Zeroes” based on its design [99]? [9]

One of the most blow-minding aspects of Barbie: The Movie is that the talented and experienced Will Ferrell who played the role of the CEO of Mattel also played the role of the father in The LEGO Movie and both notably successful films are distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures [6] [77] [78] [97]. I know there is a Mega Bloks line based on Barbie’s lifestyle [110], but it would still be cool to see an official LEGO playset based on a new building in Barbie Land in “Barbie 2” [26] [50] [62]. Moreover, there is a fan theory explaining how the father in The LEGO Movie is the same person as the CEO of Mattel from Barbie: The Movie (and also Buddy from Elf [48]) for a reason [16] [29]. But whether the theory is true or not, there can be a little more exploration for the CEO of Mattel, especially when it comes to providing some details on his family life outside of work [6]. He could decide to take a little more consideration for Ken’s role throughout Barbie’s history in “Barbie 2”, “Ken” or “Barbie: The Series”.  If there are enough predictions of a sequel or spin-off being released during the Winter season, there might as well be a scene of a Barbie or Ken doll being unwrapped by possibly a young relative of the CEO on Christmas Day [48].

The theory of Barbie: The Movie and the two LEGO movies taking place in the same universe is much like the theory of Samurai Jack taking place in the future of Townsville, the home city of The Powerpuff Girls [53]. As far-fetched as some theories would be despite some coincidences that would be convincing evidence, it would be imperative to ensure that further developments for even temporary antagonists can leave some effective impact in terms of letting a continuity flourish. You do not suppose there will be South Pole elves at Mattel this holiday season [6] [48]? [10]

Anything else to consider aside from more respect for the Kens? Sasha’s criticisms towards “Stereotypical” Barbie when they first meet in the movie were pretty harsh [6], but they would be mostly agreeable to those who recall becoming skeptical after growing out of playing with Barbie dolls [11]. Well, apart from Sasha calling Barbie a “fascist”, which was pretty uncalled for [6]. To help maintain the elements of satire in “Barbie 2”, “Ken” or “Barbie: The Series”, there might as well be some jabs at the common criticisms towards some modern Barbie dolls in Barbie Land, such as painted on clothes and plastic clothes [14]. Aside from that, it would be advisable to mostly address what was “the elephant in the room” in the first film [124], yet we still need to value the explanation of why feminism can be still important when certain people continue to make horrible claims on social media [41] [42] [32] [44] [83]. Nonetheless, getting “offended” for the pettiest reasons is so 2016 [89]. While it is important to appreciate realistic beauty standards in today’s society to prevent eating disorders and self-esteem issues, I hold no ill will against those who confidently enjoy looking like Barbies and Kens and even wish to live a similar lifestyle to them in a realistic way and I wish them the best in life [104] [105] [106] [107] [108] [109].

Aside from how “the elephant in the room” can be eventually taken to a jungle to relish in freedom [124], I would love to see an autistic Barbie in Barbie Land to ensure further diversity and equality [122] [130]. [10]

How about some hopes for remarkably ambitious marketing for “Barbie 2” or “Ken” [122]? Aside from the previously mentioned possibility of the modernised adaption of the late ‘50s swimsuit look on a new doll resembling Robbie [51], there might as well be a few gaming-related promotions [57], such as a sugary crossover event in Candy Crush Soda Saga, Candy Crush Jelly Saga or Candy Crush Friends Saga for promoting “Barbie 2” or “Ken” as a rehash of the Barbie: The Movie event in Candy Crush Saga in July [26] [63] [64] [65] [122]. Although, it can be argued that a deeply effective slogan would be more meaningful in terms of marketing a film than a promotional crossover [122] [126] [127]. A slogan for “Barbie 2” like “She still has something.” or a slogan for “Ken” like “He will be more than just Ken.” can provide a deep meaning of a new premise, quite like how the slogan for the Tomb Raiderboldly and emotionally summed up a younger Lara Croft’s character with “A survivor is born” [10] [102]. Chances are that the marketing for a sequel or spin-off film will not be as big and effective as the first film but let us not be too surprised if “Beach” Ken becomes a battler in a new chapter of Fortnite if it maintains its popularity for more than another lustrum [126] [127].

What a missed opportunity to turn the popcorn pink before the film started in this image [52] [74]. As sure as I am that the game will not be shut down anytime soon due to its ongoing popularity [26], I am sure that plenty of candy crushers who still have an appetite for playing Candy Crush Saga still have a sweet tooth for its sequels that are also likely to still be around in a few years’ time [63] [64] [65]. Alternatively, there can be another collaboration with Barbie in a future event in any of the Candy Crush games in association with promoting “Barbie: The Series”. [26]

And how cool was THIS giveaway [122]?! [132]

Barbie has gone from a doll in a striped swimsuit whose figure would be deemed problematic to the most profitable film star of the year [6] [11] [124] [125]. Aside from how bewildering it is to know that a live-action film based on the Barbie franchise has made so much money at the box office after being brought into action, a new “vampire queen” look for Draculaura from the Monster High franchise is now available to pre-order exclusively on Amazon [37] [76] [87]. It will not be long until Barbie: The Movie will once again go party, but in a format for IMAX screens with some bonus post-credits footage [38] [39] [115] [120]. Could the footage be a teaser for “Barbie: The Series”? Could “Barbie: The Series” lead to “Barbie 2” or “Ken” coming out in 2029 in honour of the 70th anniversary of the Barbie franchise [96]? Only time will tell. In the meantime, keep the pink recipes coming [5] [34] [71] [73] [85] [88] [92]! I think Wade Wilson is a little peeved about Oppenheimer beating the box-office record Deadpool 2 held for four years after being financially surpassed by Joker [36] [100] [119] [121], so I might as well get him to follow a recipe for pink tacos to treat himself [1]. Hopefully, after a little more income for Barbie: The Movie, the aftermath of the SAG-AFTRA strikes in Hollywood will be meaningful [47] [90].

“Deadpool here! Don’t you just love a forced and unnecessary but deeply appreciated special guest appearance in an article that has very little to do with them? You know, I can be a good sport about being reduced to the third highest-grossing R-rated movie star of all time [119]. Go ahead and turn my silver Oscar into a bronze one, but when the strikes are over and Deadpool 3 is in production again [121], I might just have what it takes to make my beloved Oscar gold again next year (or two). Thanks for the suggestion, my little Laurapop! I’ll be off to make those pink Barbie-inspired tacos [1]!” [91]

Anytime, Deadpool! Surely, producing the best follow-up to Barbie: The Movie ought to be quite like a different skincare routine or baking the same cake with several differences in the recipe [95]. The loyal admirers of the film are thanked for the movie’s success, and they could be thanked for the motivation to produce a follow-up [28] [103] [116]. Speaking of lovely blonde-haired ladies in pink, many fans of Princess Peach cannot wait to play as her in a new dress that is the result of her retrieving a Bubble Flower in Super Mario Bros. Wonder [81] [128] [129]. Sometime afterwards, have a blast with the 60^th anniversary of the Doctor Who franchise [46]. [8]
