Deadpool 3 Is In Development. Now What?

Who is Deadpool? What is a dead pool? A swimming pool full of blood and corpses? No. Deadpool, otherwise known as “Wade Wilson” is the permanently scarred, but witty antihero from Marvel who would break the fourth wall in many amazing ways [29] [34] [35] [44] [74]. In late 2019, I was motivated into writing a short story about him meeting Crystal Angel, my own Marvel character who has the powers of flight, telekinesis and enhanced senses [69] [70] [72]. Other than that, part of my motivation for writing about him is that Ryan Reynolds, the man who played the role of him in his two live-action movies has announced that Deadpool 3 is in development about a month ago [24] [73]. Another part of my motivation for writing about Deadpool was a dream I had about him giving me a shoulder massage after the Christmas season. I am not joking. Please do not laugh. Before we begin our quest through Deadpool’s evolution into the fierce fourth wall wrecker we love today, I would like to wish you all a brand new decade full of hope and ambition. Okay, now we can begin…with the merc himself strutting his speech after some agreements between us.

Deadpool
“Whose shoulders did I have to massage to have an article written about me? Hint: Rhymes with “Dora Billiams”. You bet your asses that’s not all I gave her.” [75]

deadpool sexy pose
“By the way, she begged me not to use any profanity or sexual innuendo in the captions at first. But then she was like, “You’re Deadpool. What would they expect?”. Isn’t she precious?” [75]
Along with Domino, the merc with a mouth made his comic debut back in 1991 as a Canadian supervillain in the ninety-eighth issue of New Mutants from Marvel [29] [34] [36]. In 1993, his own comic book miniseries was first established [29]. Despite how ruthless he was in his early years, we eventually learned that he was diagnosed with cancer and yearned for a cure. The method he went under may have cured his cancer, but caused his flesh to become horribly deformed [67], which made him chose to often wear his iconic red suit we recognise him for at first [13] [29] [44]. Nevertheless, he gained a surreal healing factor [34] [35], meaning that he can heal efficiently from serious injury. Many have considered him to be a knock off of Deathstroke from Teen Titans, a comic book series from DC due to how Deathstroke was established earlier [44] [59]. I guess it could be quite amusing of Deadpool 3 featured the masked merc making an easter egg regarding his comic debut and the comparisons between him and Deathstroke to simply pull the legs of DC fans. We all had to start from somewhere back in the day, right Deadpool?

deadpool debut
“Totally! Like Laura said, it all began back in 1991. Same year as a certain little blue speedster [57]. But guess what, Sonic? Laura is MY fangirl now!” [34] [36]
As the comic series progressed, there have been a few alternative interpretations of the manly mutate, including:

  • Ultimate Deadpool, the one with a slightly different mask [38] [64]
  • Lady Deadpool, Wade’s female counterpart [25] [44] [63]
  • Gwenpool, a modern female counterpart of the real deal [64]
  • Kidpool, an adorable child version of him [44] [63]
  • Evil Deadpool, who does not sound like good news at all [44] [63]
  • Deadpool the Duck, basically a fusion of Deadpool and Howard the Duck [37] [64]
  • Deathwish, a guy in a green edition of Deadpool’s suit [64]
  • Dreadpool, Deadpool’s evil counterpart who was eventually killed [64] [66]

Thank goodness there is hopefully no Cowpool [44]. If you have watched Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse, you would have witnessed a few alternate versions of Spider-Man, including Spider-Gwen and Spider-Ham [60]. Something tells me that it could receive a Deadpool counterpart someday after its sequel. Perhaps that would happen by the time I get grey hair. But since we are now in a time when the 2020s have only just began, any of those alternatives could be briefly referenced in a joke in Deadpool 3. While many alternate interpretations of Deadpool were quite approved throughout history, there is one that many loathed.

deadpools
“See? I’m not so bad once you become a fan of me, no matter which version of me you think you can get off to…except for Kidpool and Dogpool. Don’t go there.” [44]
Many fans and critics hated Deadpool’s cinematic debut in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which was quite like how many Littlest Pet Shop collectors loathed the designs of the pets within the third generation of the toy line by Hasbro [5] [30] [52] [58] [62] [67]. The fact that his mouth was sewn shut highly contradicted his popular nickname, “The Merc with a Mouth” [30] [74]. As for the way he had a long metal claw on each hand, I can say he at least looked quite as menacing as Wolverine [22] [67]. Aside from that, how was he supposed to comfortably hold two pistols with those claws? The Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine that marked Ryan Reynolds’ first time playing the role of the character was absolutely nothing like his mainstream counterpart, from his pure and pale skin to his mouth being completely sewn shut [5] [22] [74]. At least I can say that the Ultimate Deadpool in the comics that featured an alternative timeline and so on made up for how disturbingly unconvincing the X-Men Origins Deadpool was [5] [30] [38]. I would not be surprised if Deadpool 3 would feature a scene with an image of the “fake” Deadpool on a dartboard in the real deal’s room.

fake deadpool
“Hey Laura, remember when your mom told you not to answer the door for strangers when you were younger? Well, I’m warning you to not answer the door for the impostor. He’s definitely not as sexy.” [30]
2009 may have been the year of the “fake” Deadpool [5] [22], but it was the year when the real deal was featured in the animated film Hulk VS Wolverine as an antagonist [8] [10] [41], thus marking his first animated speaking role compared to his non-speaking cameos in the animated series based on X-Men from 1993 [19] [29] [56]. The animation within each sequence is quite easing with smoothly moving characters and an art style that I would describe as “realism encased in 2D grittiness”. The way Wilson was being strangled by one of Omega Red’s tentacles was quite unnerving [41], but the moment when his favourite gun was destroyed in slow motion was amusing [8]. It was also quite funny when he bellows in relief to express how he is still alive, but he then gets crushed by the Hulk [8]. I will admit that he was a bit of a jerk voiced by Nolan North in Hulk VS Wolverine and in one episode of the stop-motion series titled “Marvel Superheroes: What The…?!” that featured him being voiced by Jesse Falcon [8] [10] [25] [41] [43], but at least Deadpool 3 may still portray his softer side [13] [14] [74]. Quite the cocky and talkative talking man, aren’t you, bub?

deadpool and wolverine
“You bet I am, princess. Oh, and don’t answer the door for Wolverine when he’s at your house either. He sucks.” [41]
Before Ryan Reynolds was seen as the real deal, a man dressed up as Deadpool crashed a panel at San Diego Comic-Con back in Summer 2012 [23] [46] [51], staying in character to promote the video game based on the merc that would later be released in 2013 [29], then re-released in 2015 [3]. He also continued to brag and such in order to promote it in Marvel’s Headquarters in mid-2013 [47] [48] [49] [50]. And no, the cosplayer was not Nolan North as he was seen right next to him at a panel during the time of promoting the game at San Diego Comic-Con. I hope the man gets another chance to be Deadpool again someday as I believed he portrayed the character really well during his time at Comic-Con [46] [51]. Perhaps he could be an overly friendly Deadpool cosplayer who has a fangasm over the real Deadpool in the final outcome of Deadpool 3? Then again, probably not. I bet some of you guys would also love to see the actor as Deadpool again sometime in this era, even if he would greet us by yelling into a megaphone [23] [46] [51].

THIS GUY
“I was such a Dorkpool back then. Oh wait. I’m still a Dorkpool now. LOL!” [46]

deadpool poem
“And I am quite the poet. Now you know it.” [50]
Speaking of video games, let us make a list of the video games Deadpool made an appearance in:

  • X-Men Legends 2: Rise of the Apocalypse [11] [61]
  • Marvel Ultimate Alliance [11] [25] [61]
  • Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 [11] [25] [61]
  • The game based on X-Men Origins: Wolverine as the “fake” Deadpool [11]
  • Marvel Pinball [11]
  • Marvel Super Squad Online [11]
  • Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions [11]
  • Marvel Vs. Capcom 3: A Fate of Two Worlds [11] [61]
  • As previously mentioned, his own game from 2013 [3] [29]
  • Lego Marvel Heroes [11]
  • Marvel Heroes [11] [25] [61]
  • Marvel: Contest of Champions [11]

Listening to the different voices for Deadpool throughout his video game appearances [11] [61], I think I have a good suggestion for Deadpool 3 that will make the film franchise even more faithful to the comics. If Deadpool 3 ought to feature the two voices in the crimson comedian’s head, I think the one represented with white text boxes should be voiced by John Kassir and the one represented with yellow text boxes could be voiced by either Nolan North or Tom Kenny [25] [60]. Why? The roughness of Kassir’s Deadpool voice would suit the more serious voice’s tone while the upbeat nature of North and Kenny’s Deadpool voices would match the tone of the other voice [25] [61].

deadpool on phone
“Not much detail on the games I appeared in? C’mon Laura, you’re supposed to be an aspiring video game journalist! But nevermind. Let’s carry on.” [61]
Deadpool gained further attention in the 2010s by appearing in Ultimate Spider-Man [10] [15] [16] [17] [39] [56]. With his more high-pitched voice [25], I say he is more hyperactive in the cartoon than how he was in Hulk VS Wolverine. Peter Parker as Spider-Man and Wade Wilson as Deadpool may have behaved like immature and competitive brothers [16], but it was probably one of the causes of the yaoi shipping, Spideypool [7]. It is fairly interesting to see a watered-down interpretation of Deadpool for younger audiences, but I honestly do not think it can upstage the one for us grown-ups. Aside from that, I can understand why he had to twist his origin story because the premise of a character being diagnosed with cancer would be quite difficult to respectfully portray in a family-friendly cartoon [13] [16] [17] [39]. Additionally, the way Wade had to go through such torment in his true origin would be too unbearable for our young ones to watch [13]. Nevertheless, my main motivation for bringing the dumbed-down Deadpool up is that Will Friedle’s energetic voice for the comedic merc could be an alternative role for the more upbeat voice in his head if that aspect ought to be brought up once again in Deadpool 3 [15] [25] [56] [61].

deadpool cartoon
“A kid-friendly version of yours truly may seem like a load of degrading crap to some of you guys, but at least Laura completely understands why some things needed to be changed. I could reward her with an R-rated bedtime story tonight.” [16]
Now this one is for both Marvel AND anime lovers. The comedic merc also made an appearance in the anime, Marvel Disk Wars: The Avengers and the anime, Marvel Future Avengers [10] [42] [56]. Just like Ultimate Spider-Man, Marvel Disk Wars: The Avengers was meant to be targeted towards a younger demographic [42]. It and Marvel Future Avengers were meant to bring the appeal of Marvel to young Japanese audiences [42] [56]. For the English dubs of both anime series, he was voiced by Jason Spisak [6] [10] [32] [56]. Speaking of voices and an anime art style, I still believe it would be very interesting to witness the two different voices in Deadpool’s head being voiced by two different voice actors who previously voiced him in Deadpool 3 as it would be quite like witnessing a combination of three of Catherine’s additional voice actresses in the DLC for the Japanese port of Catherine: Full Body [4] [9] [27]. Featuring Spisak as one of the voices in the merc’s head in Deadpool 3 could further increase his recognition for voicing him in some associations, even though some of us may prefer any of his other previous voice actors doing the honours, especially Nolan North who has voiced him the most times [25].

deadpool anime
“I hate anime [44], but I am at least grateful for those opportunities.” [25]

deadpool anime 2
“So Laura is suggesting that two different voice actors should do the voices in my head while Reynolds puts himself in my shoes…and suit. WTF? What drugs is she on?” [56]
Speaking of an animated series, what a missed opportunity to unleash an edgy animated series for adults based on Deadpool in the 2010s, the decade that increased his popularity outside the comics. One was briefly in production with Stephen and Donald Glover as the executive producers and writers, but it was sadly cancelled with not a single chance of officially airing on FXX [40]. The channel’s station and the production team for the series had creative differences, which must have caused a huge lack of motivation for completing ten episodes [40]. If you briefly remember witnessing some rejected test footage that was leaked online, I can honestly consider you to be lucky [57]. I find it quite strange how the merc’s mask features yellow eyes instead of the usual white ones in two screenshots of the footage, but maybe that was just to make him match the setting’s environment [40] [57]. I hope there will be an animated series based on Deadpool in the 2020s that ought to be produced passionately under strong agreements between a creative team and a channel station as my boyfriend and I would love to watch something like that.

deadpool cancelled tv series
“Don’t worry, Laura honey. There’ll be plenty of this sexy motherf**ker in this kind of animation to go around. Maybe another studio will give me an animated series by the time you get married to your boyfriend. Maybe in Canada?” [40]
Oh yeah, you all saw this one coming! Deadpool’s official live-action movie that was released back in early 2016 became the highest-grossing R-rated superhero movie, followed by its sequel faintly surpassing such a satisfying result until Joker beat that record again in 2019 [76]. It received critical acclaim most notably for its exceptional humour and the amazing portrayal of Deadpool by Ryan Reynolds that made up for how loathsomely unbelievable his portrayal was in X-Men Origins: Wolverine [22]. I enjoyed watching the movie with my boyfriend at his house back in Summer 2016 for the same reasons for its success [13]. The well-deserved sequel was released in May 2018 after so much promotional material [14] [33]. One of my favourite promotions for it is when Reynolds as the merc answers certain questions on Google [26]. I also admire how he wore a pink suit in an advert for LetsFCancer.com a month before Deadpool 2 was released [53]. Both of the movies made up for how the animated series was cancelled, right? As previously stated, Deadpool 3 is currently in the works [24] [73], so there are many opportunities to expand on the mainstream live-action interpretation of the comedic killer’s life and plenty of time to ensure that the final outcome will gracefully mark the franchise as a trilogy.

“Of course, I had to fondle a certain someone’s balls to have my own box office hits.” [13] [75]

deadpool with radio
“And not to change the subject, but I heard that Laura often worries about her posture. She should try carrying a pair of katanas on her back to keep it straight. It works for me.” [74]
We all know that Deadpool’s wittiness and humour are his best-selling points, as well as important methods of somehow benefiting his mental health [44] [65]. Furthermore, let us gather some more examples of his comedic antics. At some point in his own game, he has a phone call with his own voice actor, Nolan North to inform him about the need for a voice-over, but then he ends the call rudely [3]. I love how he tries to apologise to David Beckham for his edgy remark in his first film with various methods in a promotional video for the sequel [1]. Wade Wilson is very capable of remaining cunningly sociable in such a charming way after the horrific times he went through [13] [14] [44] [74], which is why I admire and can empathise with him as I sometimes use humour in my writing and such to overcome isolation, alienation, self-loathing and low self-esteem. I bet we cannot wait for even more hilarious moments with Deadpool in his third film. However, if he ever uses the terms “autism” and “autistic” as insults like some social media troll [28], I will slap his face so hard that his head will fall right off.

chillax
“Me using the term “autistic” as an insult? C’mon Laura, I’m not that much of an asshole. Chillax.” [75]
Would you believe Mr. Wilson has been married about sixteen times throughout Marvel history [12]? He was engaged to his vixen Vanessa in the film series but sadly had to let her go when he had cancer in the first film and she was killed in the second film [13] [14] [67] [74]. At some point in Deadpool Corps, he gets married to Shiklah, but then she leaves him for Dracula [12]. Let us not forget about the spookily elegant Lady Death plenty of us saw in Deadpool’s hack and slash game [3] [20]. It would be quite shockingly surprising to see her appear in Deadpool 3 as Wade has attempted suicide a few times in Deadpool 2, but survived every one of them [14] [74], much to my relief. Some of Wade’s other wives include:

  • Domino, his debut buddy
  • Captain Marvel when she was known as “Ms. Marvel” [12]
  • A woman named “Gretchen” [12] [34]
  • A mysterious stripper named “Genosha” [12]
  • Satana Hellstrom, who has one of the coolest names ever [12]
  • A giant hippo alien named “Orska” [12]

Speaking of marriage and romance, I would love a highly convincing Deadpool cosplayer to be the vicar for my wedding.

deadpool x shiklah
“Even though Laura has a boyfriend, I think she’s a little jealous.” [34]

“So Laura, you want me to be the vicar for your wedding, huh? Well, as long as you and your fella be good parents when you have kids and not f**k around with anyone else, I’d say it’ll be worth it. Oh, and don’t forget to pay me.” [2]
Even though all of his canon love interests are women, it has been stated that the masked rascal is pansexual [31] [44], meaning he can be attracted to any ally regardless of their gender [21]. Just look at the way he makes those naughty gestures with his hands when he is in the arms of Colossus in Deadpool 2 [14], along with his perverted remarks towards women in his own game [3]. Speaking of the game, I do not like how the fact that he is pansexual was simply swept under the rug and only his straight side was heavily shown in the game’s story [3]. Nevertheless, perhaps Deadpool 3 ought to explore his pansexuality further by possibly showing more signs of it. As a strong supporter of LGBT rights, I am delighted to know that Marvel and DC were not afraid to let some of their characters explore their sexualities throughout the years, including Wade Wilson [31]. Despite how no male love interest for the merc has been present throughout the history of the comics, we can all respect that fact that he is attracted to anyone regardless of their gender identity [44].

deadpool x colossus
“I’m so glad that I’m not being written about by a homophobe. Remember that one time I took the p**s out of the Westboro Baptist Church [68]? Good times.” [75]
So, we all know how Deadpool’s legacy started and what he is mostly known for these days, including how he spent Halloween back in 2015 and how he spent too long in a phone booth to rescue someone in need [54] [55] [74]. We as old fans and new fans will always recognize him for:

  • His red suit that prevents bad guys from seeing him bleed heavily [13]
  • The way he slices and dices with a pair of katanas [44] [74]
  • His incredible healing factor [41] [44] [67] [74]
  • His fondness of guns [13] [67] [74]
  • His outstanding sense of humour, including fourth wall breaking [29] [44]
  • Being rather cheeky sometimes [67] [74]
  • His appetite for tacos and chimichangas

Am I a fangirl of him nowadays? Let two voices in my head do the talking [71]. The third film based on the manly mutate’s legacy that is theorised to be ready for theatres in about 2021 or 2022 ought to conclude the reimagined origin story [73], thus making it an edgy but excellent trilogy. Speaking of 2021, it will be the year for celebrating his 30th anniversary and I will most certainly be up for celebrating that. A hearty thank you goes to the menacing merc for being his devilishly charming self during his participation.
